Almost finished with the Alb. D.III Oeffag wood grain application.  Crosses & Datum then a touch up.

Here is is without any dulling down.  From the factory floor lets do the roll out.

Jan Bobek of HGW has been releasing beau coup detail parts for aviation subjects for over a year and a half.   I picked up some of his Wood Grain Decals and had a go.  The sets I tried first were for the Eduard or Blue Max 1:48 Austro - Hungarian Albatros D.III (Oeffag).  While good decals overall I highly suggest a clear coat before using them.

Stephen, those do look the part of plywood.   In your opinion, how do they stack up against doing a traditionally tedious paint job of wood tone and then streaking it with a darker paint?

That's a beautiful D.III at any rate.

Those decals really do look good.  I noticed on their site you can choose between clear and solid decals, so which did you use here?  I imagine at a very close inspection you can see a dot pattern from the printing process, so wondering if on the solid ones is the background colour made up of dots or is it a solid hue?

Thanks for the kind words.  As to the application elements I like trying new things.  I have a whole thread dedicated to wood grain replication.  The HGW decals are an easy way for even a novice to get a good look to their build. 

As to the types I used both the translucent and the white to get a typical variation one sees in the original airframes.  Though if I were to do it again I would try go more blonde in the tint. I encouraged Jan Bobek of HGW to do the Oeffag decals in a lighter tint.

When I cut these sections out and used them I kept the paper backing and numbered them when they were dry.  That way I have a ready to use set of patterns for the next build even if Jan does not follow my recommendations.  As to the dots I used the Detail Masters wood grain on the interior because the dots show up too easily.  The HGW types seem to stand up to inspection pretty good.

One bit of good news from HGW.   They want to use my images on their website.

HGW has given us a new selection of water slide wood grain decals. Some sheets come in generic panel sections others come in a layout that is designed for specific aircraft.  Here I will add the decal sheet panels for the Eduard 1:48 Alb. D.V/Va. Not bad for an over all effect. The only short fall is there are no lower wing root panels offered.
