B-29 conversion to TU-4 question..
Posted by kustommodeler1 on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 5:24 PM

Howdy folks! I have Revell's 1/48 scale B-29 kit, and just wondering how much would it take to represent it as a Tupolev TU-4? From pictures of the one at Monino, I dont think it would be much more than a marking issue...

What do you think?

From what I've read about the Tu-4, the russians copied the B-29 so precisely that the rudder pedals even say boeing on them. You could probably get away with putting red stars on and calling it a Tu4, not a B-29.

EDIT: The gun turrets looks differant, look more flush to the airframe. And the guns are differant, the barrels are longer.

The front glass was different too. Probably not enough to notice in a model, but i remember reading a story about how the pilots hated flying them because of the weird effects looking through the glass. This was caused by a slight difference in shape because they couldn't get the compound curves right.

The article from wikipedia is pretty spot on. I watched a documentary of how the Soviets reversed engineered the B-29, copied every detail down to a hole that was drilled on accident when it was in the USA. There is a slight difference between the two but at 1/48 scale you would not be able to tell the difference.
