Profiline Let L-13 Blanik (Finished 30-102012)

This build was started last christmas and progessed very good, until I had some major setbacks with the decals (more on that later)

The kit is the Profiline 1/72 Let L-13 Blanik, a Czech sail plane. The kit had some favorable reviews and would fit nicely in my small collection of 1/72 gliders so I bought one. The overal impression on the plastic was very good, it is a CAD/CAM designed model. Supposedly Profiline made this Blanik model just to develop the skills of CAD/CAM desiging.

Unfortunatly, the instructions where a bit vague on the postition of the cockpit interior. If you ever build one; use the computergenerated box art on the side for reference!

The first attempt looked like this:

However, this resulted in a severe step the the canopy was attached:

The solution: I hade to remove all from the cockpit, repostion and add a spreader.

The canopy fitted much better now but the fit of the wing was still mediocre:

The kit was masked and sprayed with a spray can (yes, the blanik is a metal sail plane)

But then disaster struck. The decals are extremely thin and fragile. I destroyed 2 of the 3 possible decorations, including a very cool DOSAAF cheme :-(

That was last january. It took me some time to get over the setbacks and solve the decal problem. The solution should be to coat the decals with Microscale decal film. So I have coated the decals and am going to put them on tonight (ECT, ofcourse). I hope they work, else I will have to get some new decals from Profiline because there are amazingly little AM options for gliders!

Last night I worked on the decals. I must say that the Microscale decal film helped but not much. I gave them one coat of decal film and the decals went from "extremely fragile and unworkable" to "fragile and barely workable".

Without the decal film the decals just shattered into pieces when manipulated. With the decal film I still had some torn decals. It looks ok from a distance:

But up close you can see where the decals haved torn or folded. Furthermore, due to their fragility, I was unable to get all the lines straight:

It is defintily not perfect but I decided to keep it this way. Further manipulation of the decals will just cause more problems. And replacement decals form Profiline will probably have the same problems. Let just keep it at "it is the best I could do".

Last stage of this build, I put on a matt coat and removed the masking.

Here is the build with the masking removed. I used 3m scotch tape, it is very easy put on the canopy but removing it is always a tedious task:

Last things to do are the decals on the windows (!) and a painting few details.

Nice work on what appears to be a TINY and difficult subject.  It turned out very nice.

It is indeed a small aircraft. The difficulty is only because of this kit (instructions, decals and enginering of the wings). I have several other gliders (mostly Polish kits by ZTS Plastyk) which all where very easy and quick builds. So gliders are not a difficult subject per se.

I have finished the build, I added the wheel and tail strut. Weathering does not look right on gliders but I did brush some pastels on the moving surfaces of the wing and tail, just to get a little difference in the sheen of the rest of the plane.
