Weathering Cockpits

The acrylics should be fine under the artist oils. It's really only enamels you have to watch out for, and even then it's not a big deal if you use a gentle thinner for the oil wash.

As for drybrushing, I prefer to do it before any washes (I use Model Master enamel Dunkelgrau for most of my drybrushing and have found it works well across various interior greens and the RLM 66 of late Luftwaffe birds...stuff like the green-blue of Soviet jets requires a different approach though).

Thanks Doogs, I have actually been using your website and the Hun Hunter build you did as inspiration for my own build. Needless to say my airbrushing is a tad rusty to say the least. But thank you for the tip and I cant wait to get this build under my belt and on to the next one.

I would recommend a gloss coat on the cockpit just because it'll allow the wash to flow better into recesses and low areas, and it'll also wipe away better if you end up with too much. Use an acrylic gloss if your gonna wash with oils. And do the dry-brushing first, as then those areas will get a wash too, along with the gloss coat and it will all get tied together if you know what I mean. Then as a final step apply a flat coat. This will also help if you want to apply any pigments at the very end. This is the treatment my cockpits get:

I use a nice gloss coat with Future and once dry wash with Florys Promodeller.

I have used dry brushing both before and after washes (not on same kit), and also just dry brushing- no wash.  Have also used "dry toothpicking".

Thank you guys for all of the insights. I ended up having to go over the cockpit last night with model master interior green because the whacked out concoction i threw together came out too forresty green. So now that the base coat is an enamel i think i will be brushing on some future and doing the raw umber artist oil wash after the dry brushing is complete. I probably won't have any bench time until at least tuesday, at which time i will upload some photos of the progress.
