Best source for AM decals?
Posted by BrandonD on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 4:03 PM

I've got several Tamiya kits I'd like to go with aftermarket decals for, but other than eBay, is there a good source?

I really like the F4U-1 corsair sheet from Barracuda since it has the -1D and birdcage markings, but they are out of stock and I can't find it anywhere (though I'm open to other brands as well).

There are others (Mosquito FB Mk.VI/NF Mk.II, P-47M, a stencil sheet for an FW-190 A-3). After using Cartograf decals, I am spoiled and don't feel like fighting with the typical Tamiya ones. I may go Techmod on the Corsair, which seems readily available, but I am looking for any other source that has a lot and actually has them in stock.

Thanks!

My first stop for AM decals is Sprue Brothers. My second stop is eBay.

If you are not in a rush, check often with Squadron. I have purchased several decal sheets for $2 and $3 when they go on sale. That is a huge savings. The bad thing about this is you have to be patient and you need to keep checking back. If you need them now, the Sprue Bros. is the quickest shipper.

Hannant's in the UK is another excellent source for all sorts of decals. I've ordered from them on a number of occasions. Shipping is actually relatively fast, although a bit more expensive. I highly recommend them.

I think it all depends if the decals are still in production or old OOP. If the former, Sprue Brothers or Squadron as mentioned above can often give you good deals. If OOP, I like to cast my hunt wide and do a google search to see who may have the set I want. I had to do that for a set from Aztec Models. Fortunately I also have two top notch LHS nearby that are well stocked in decals as well. And kit collector shows and swap meets are usually good places to find old stuff too!

Yippers. Do a google search that includes scale, general subject and "decal".

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks, all. The search function on Sprue Brothers wasn't working too well, but using the filter by country and year yielded much of what I was looking for.

Thanks again!

Flightdecs.ca has ALLLLL kinds of decals, not easy to search though, you have to know what you're looking for or be prepared to do some searching.

Vance - thanks for the tip! Called them today, and the guy was really nice and helpful. I ordered decals for my Corsair and stencils for my Spitfires.
