This one may have been started 7 or 8 years ago, I don't really remember. I used the prop hubs and engine fronts from a Monogram B-26, antennas from the Academy B-17E, and the pitot tubes from a Pioneer AT-11. The interior floor, cockpit and bulkheads were rebuilt with sheet styrene and spares. I tried to use the Squadron vacform canopy but ended up using the using the kit part. The model was sanded and rescribed, windows were fitted so they protruded and then were sanded smooth to the exterior. It was in many repects a stooge to work on natural metal finish and was repainted in whole or part many times over the years. I am still not there with the natural metal, I would like to find a clear coat that works because I keep messing the finsh up handling it the way I am doing it now. The red is Gunze Super Italian Red. Although I like the model and it is very colorful, in the back of my mind someone keeps repeating "lipstick on a pig, lipstick on a pig....The decals were drawn in CorelDraw X6 and printed on an ALPS MD-1000.

I really like the red scheme too. Don't think I've seen that on this model before.

Great job on a less than top shelf model. Those Glencoe's can have real problems, but you've surmounted them beautifully.

If your're still thinking lipstick on a pig, perhaps it is because the C-46 is somewhat swinish in appearance with that snout for a cockpit...
Now if only Revell would do one in 1/48...

As for one of these in 1/48? Nah, but I wouldn't mind RM doing one in 1/72 in the manner they have done the C-54.
Pawel, I am working on a Hasegawa Nakajima B5N for the Pearl Harbor GB at the moment. I expect it will be done a little quicker than the C-46! Painted all the canopy framing today.

Looks great! I have a soft spot in heart for C-46s. Saw them all over the place just after war. Built one- it got trashed a few years ago. Surprised there are so few kits of it.

Very nicely done! I like the metal finish. Theres some degree of shade differentiation but subtle enough to not look exaggerated.

Allen, I tried to keep the aluminum fairly uniform on an airplane that has been in service for a while like this one must have been. I am afraid the variations are fairly automatic for me, I add a lot of it unintentionally while I am handling the model. Still working on that. Have been for many years

Excellent job on this Air Training Command aircraft. Did you visit the original in Palmdale for reference? I have been through the Fairbanks-based Everts Air C-46F "Maid in Japan" several times. They are a fascinating aircraft.

I have an old copy of FSM or another glue mag that gives a good rundown on the silver/ red schemes. I'll dig it out.
One thing IIRC, none were ever painted with "flourescent orange".
Somewhere in the stash there's a C-119 that has the Indo China CIA scheme. Decals of USAF in red, slightly darker than Insignia Red as though the black letters on the silver wing were painted over.
John, your C-54 could be a SAC thumper at Goose Bay, on the ramp next to some Scorpions.
Nice job on the natural-metal finish! I have an old William's Bros. kit of the C-46 which I was going to use in a diorama, but it takes me so long to build models, even out-of-the-box, that I'll probably never get around to it. Now that I'm on the wrong side of 50 and I'm learning that I'm "only immortal for a limited time," I'd have to be Mel Brooks' 2000-year-old man to build everything in the stash!

Hey John. Getting a little better actually, thanks for asking. I had some sort of stomach things that lasted almost 2 weeks. Won't go into the gory details. Busy with work and a general feeling of mojolessness. I keep lurking though. Always good to see your stuff. Since my forum time is WAY less than it used to be I feel kind of homeless.
