Hand Brushed models completed
Posted by scigs30 on Saturday, August 29, 2015 9:00 PM

I just started back up with building plastic model aircraft, but this time I am brush painting.  I used to brush paint back in the 70s and early 80s because I did not have an Airbrush.  My job has me away from home and I want to build my hobbies but my rockets and freeflight models would be a little tough on the road so I decided to get back into plastic models that did not require much space or special tools.  I am using all Testors because it is easy to get, 40 percent off at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. I am keeping my builds simple since I have a lot of builds for all 3 of my hobbies.  The BF-109 is a Revell kit I bought at Michaels for 6.99 and bought the paint set for 6 dollars at Hobby Lobby. I built out of the box but had to add colors to the blue paint and green paint for a color closer to the BF109.  This build was completed in 1 day and painted the next. Still have to clear coat and add decals.

Could have used some filler behind the wing.

Next to my 1/72 Testors BF-109 hand brushed.

This is the P40 I was using Testors acrylics on, jury is still out on the acrylics, I like the Testors enamels.  This was bought at Michaels for 4.99, just a practice model.

Old Monogram snap tite built out of the box hand brushed.

Minicraft Reno Air, good kit bad decals....Hand Brushed with Testors after spraying white with Testors spray paint.

The cheap paint set I bought at Hobby Lobby.

More old kits to build.

My other hobbies that keep my busy, minus my RC planes I build that are in storage.

That's really nice work. I subscribe to a couple of British aircraft modeling mags, and brush paint is the norm. It's a skill for sure, but I like to do it too.

My only thing, it's an exercise in futility without good brushes. I've kind of let my modeling ones get beat up, so this makes me think about some new ones.

I used to paint icons, or as Fr. Brendan says "write" them since they are a form of prayer. I have a couple of sets of good brushes, that can't be used for modeling, but they taught me to treat them like a partner and keep them in good shape.

I appreciate your skill.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Great work!  The stick and tissue builds look great too.  Built soooooo many of them years and years ago.  Still build one every now and then for the fun of it.

WHAT A MODEL ROOM !!!

Everyone needs a "mental health" escape cave and u have one that must lift your spirits sky high!!

I found if I thin enamels with acryllic lacquer thinner they can be hand painted with surprising good results !! But  lightly brush and always keep your brush loaded with paint!! Make sure you brush in one direction and do NOT go back and forth, just lightly lay it on.

BUT you MUST have really good -yes the $$ is worth it brushes. I picked up a bunch at Hobby Lobby on sale and THEY DO make the difference.

In addition VALLEJO Paints hand brush brush well too-yes thin them to 2% milk consistency. I do this so my son can paint his models when I can't be home for him to use the airbrush!!
