AMT 1/72 YB-49 masks, stencils, decals
Posted by oakleyposterboy on Thursday, November 26, 2015 6:44 PM

I just opened up AMT's 1/72 YB-49.  It's not so complex, but the kit is so old that the decals have yellowed.  Can any recommend replacement decals?  If not specific for the YB-49, perhaps some generic cold war-era USAF decal set ("USAF" decals, USAF roundels w/ stripes, etc)?

Next, I'm wondering if anyone is aware of canopy masks for this kit?

Finally, the paint scheme calls for some black stripes to be painted on.  What's the best way to do these?  I'm planning to paint the plane with Tamiya's AS-12 bare-metal silver, so I'm not to worried about masking it if I have to.

You should try the trick of taping the decals to a sunny window. The sunlight will bleach the decals back to normal. Spray the black stropes then tape the area to remain black. Hope this helps

You will have to source insignia and service stencils form other subjects I'm afraid. The XB-35/YB-49 kits have ZERO aftermarket, which is a little surprising considering they need a lot of help. I would have liked to have seen vac-form transparencies (need a tailcone bubble without the gunsight mount), decals with full stencils (the kit decals are thick, offset litho printed, with blotchy ink), resin tires (kit tires lack tread detail), an obligatory Eduard PE set, and finally seamless resin intakes (the shallow kit intakes have bogus screen texture molded to the openings, while the real things were huge tunnels leading to the engines).
