COMPLETED w/extra photos Academy 1/72 F-35A Lightning II
Posted by Toshi on Monday, August 22, 2016 3:59 AM

I always wanted to make this aircraft, so when I found this at Hobby Lobby, I was ecstatic.  Here is my next project a Lightning II.  I hope everyone enjoys watching this build as much as I'll enjoy building the F-35A!

It's an interesting kit, it's made so you don't have to paint it.  Although, I'll still paint this kit.

There are also the Fujimi and hasegawa kits. I would normally be looking at the Hase kit, but that does not have open weapons bay and the wheel wells don't seem well detailed. I think it will boil down to how i wnat to display it. It will be nice when we get a 35B as i would like to do a British version.

Here is what I've done thus far in regards to painting.  I did this free hand old school way with a paint brush.  It ain't perfect that's for sure.  LOL!  My hands aren't shaking today so I'm happy with the outcome.  There's still much more to paint on top as well as the bottom half.

Ahaha. Toshi builds the F-35.  I have this exact same kit.  Was supposed to begin work on it this year, but put it off for later (beginning to sound like the real F-35, eh? lol).

Oh goodie, the Toshi show. In today's episode, Toshi builds the F-35. I think I'll just sit down here and watch.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

LOL!  Very good one allan.  Whats your thoughts on it?  Do you think it's a good kit or just mediocre at best?  Thank you in advance!

Are you going to build a Luke AFB-based plane? The last airshow or two that they've had at Luke, they had an F-35 on display.

I'm not sure right now.  I'm still having problems painting the airframe and I'm not happy right now with the outcome.  I think I'm going to just spray it one color.  Thanks for stopping by!

My hand painting job looked like the work of a finger painting as my build progressed.  So instead, here is a reincarnated Lightning II in gray.  Sometimes, it's better to keep things simple.

Toshi,

That F-35 of yours is starting to look reeeeaal good. Im getting an urge to start mine.  Right after I finish those 3 items on my bench.

I was quite impressed with the details of the Academy kit, although I think some are saying the surface detailing on those stealth panels are exaggerated.  I think theyre fine.

The multi-color format reminded me of Matchbox kits.

A little bit.  I was promised the kit would show the cutting edge in model aircraft kit technology, that it would address all my fighter, strike and close air support model cravings, and most importantly, that prices would come down eventually.   Zip it!

Seriously, I like the F-35. I see myself buying and building more than one.

Thank you allan!  I so appreciate your support in my projects.  I am having a hard time detailing this 1/72 kit.  The parts are so small and my eyes are not able to see so well.  Just getting old as Mrs. Toshi reminds me. LOL!

Thank you for your report back in regards to the quality of this kit.  Your insight is very refreshing!

Toshi,

The 3 things I have on my bench?  Haha. Funny you should ask.

On my desk:

1.1/700 Reefer (cargo vessel) scratchbuilt that I began in the mid 90s but never got to finish (I dont know why).

2. 1/72 Ace LAV-25 Piranha

3. 1/72 Ace LAV-25R

These things are on my desk now since weeks ago as I was wrapping up on the MB-339 Veltro I began work on my 1/72 Matchbox Dornier Skyservant.  This is funny.  I was considering ordering the (now) Revell Skyservant cause I think its a cool plane to build, but as I was shifting around boxes in my stash discovered I actually had the kit.

So i spent about a week scribing lines, rivet marks and such other details onto the fuselage, only to discover later that my kit is missing a windscreen (of all things) and both props.  Ive written Revell Germany and thankfully they responded favorably. May take 3 weeks to handle according to them, and since Im on the other side of the world, I was thinking, maybe 6.

So I wont let myself have an empty bench (or else modeler's block) so I scrounged about for something to build.  I initially planned to build a ferry kit I got but stopped since my research showed me the ferry used vertical bar railings rather than the usual horizontal stuff PE makers use (See Ship Section).  So I ran across the reefer from the mid-90s and told myself, about time to make this.

So while working on that I realize I had left out two Ace LAV kits that I had removed from the stash shelves.  I looked inside, decided they were too hard and too impractical to improve/build into a nice kit, but some other boxes had occupied the space they were previously sitting on.  So now I cant put them back.  So, yeah, Ill just build them, whatever the outcome.

I couldve just told you the three kits, I know.  Sorry. LOL!

Nice work on the F-35 Toshi.  Heck, I'm simply impressed (and proud) that you are building in 1/72 scale. Good on ya! Your doing a fine job there as I'm sure the scale is challenging.

allan, LOL!  That's a great reiteration of your three kit builds on your bench.  I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart as I so cherish our conversations.  It keeps me in touch and you motivate me as well as other forum members that read and reply on my threads.  This is such a great community.  The world could learn so much from FSM Forum members.

With that said, it sounds like you've got your hands full.  It also sounds like you have a very large stash to pick and choose from.  I wish I had such a large playground to play in.  LOL!

Thank you my friend!  I started with a Academy 1/72 Mustang and Mrs. Toshi loved it.  We then went and purchased a Academy Corsair and Hellcat both also in 1/72.  It's very challenging for me to build in such a scale as you so correctly stated but it's fun at the same time!  Thank you JOE RIX for your support and read and replies, this means so much to me and I so enjoy our conversations.
