This will be my first attempt at a natural metal finish so keep your fingers crossed.  Kit I'm using is the Tamiya 1/48 P-51D. I will be using a Aires cockpit kit and Alclad II finishes. Hope you enjoy the updates.

Cockpit looks good!  If its not too late the armor plating behind the seat should be black not green.

Thanks a lot Bronto!, I haven't put the halves together yet so I will fix that.

Looks great. I built that one ootb and it's a great kit. I just sprayed alclad ii aluminum on my tamiya p47d tonight . Do the gloss black first and let it dry for a couple days. And turn down the psi when spraying the alclad to 15-17. On my p51 I hit the panel lines with tamiya smoke after the alclad set for a couple days.

Thanks,

John

Nice job on your cockpit.  Looking forward to the Alclad NMF.

Hello!

Many years ago I have read on these forums, that on a P-51 Mustang the wings were puttied to be very smooth and then painted silver. Only the fuselage wa true NMF. Maybe someone could confirm that? Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Yes indeed, eveything except the gun access/ammo doors on top.  It was done at the factory to keep the "laminairflow", which it was called.  I must confess I never fill the panel lines because I don't particularly like the looks of it.  It's also my understanding the putty would eventually work it's way out.  So technically both could be right.

That pit looks great Murphy.  Here's my recent build of this kit should you need a quick reference on the tricky areas.  I look forward to your progress.

The entire wing was not painted though, only about the first 2/3rds or so and the flaps and ailerons were bare metal. The are some very good color photos of factory aircraft in books and on the web. Also, yes combat pilots reported that the Laminer flow only lasted a little while. With fuel hoses being drug across and crew crawling all over it the wing got trashed pretty fast. But the pilots said they could feel the difference when they got a new mount. What ever you do, do not use modern Warbirds as a reference.

Not much progress this week (hate it when work gets in the way Confused)

Removed the molded instrument panel dashboard so that the resin dashboard will fit

Took the pencil grinder and removed the raised detail in order to accept the resin sides

I decided not to attach the sides to the resin cockpit first and then installing as one whole piece. Instead I super glued to the fuselage halves so there wouldn't be any gaps between the resin sides and the fuselage

Very nice work so far....flashbacks. I'm curious to see how that Aires instrument coaming fits in there.

Murph -

It's looking great....nice work on the pit. I'll be watching and look forward to the final photos. When you reach the section of the build where you apply the alclad II share your thoughts on it....I also have a P-51 build coming up and thought about using the same paint.

Replacing the kit gun fairings with some Ultracast fairings

This came out easier than I was expecting... just took my time. I made cuts with the saw in the panel lines in the direction of the guns and for the cross panel line where I couldn't reach with the saw I just scribed deep with the knife until I was able to break the piece off.  Also note I did this before attaching wing halves which makes it much easier to work with.  I will attach the resin fairings on once I have the halves together.
