Revell 1/48 PV-1 Ventura Blonde Blitz
Posted by Aggieman on Saturday, May 20, 2017 7:53 PM

I have just put the finishing touches on Revell's fantastic kit, the PV-1 Ventura.  Any one looking for a relatively cheap kit that will build easily into a potential show-stopper, this should be your first stop.  It is not quite Tamiya quality but it is nevertheless a great kit with solid detail right out of the box and mostly good fit.  The only real negative of the kit is its props, which should be replaced with an after-market set containing the wider paddle blades than are what come with the kit.  From my understanding, Revell got their design specs based on a restored Ventura that had been fitted with props that were not used on war-time Venturas.

Any way, this is the kit that I built.

In looking for replacement props, I found several detail sets for this kit that inspired me to save some cash and scratch build these details myself.  The sets I found are by Eduard and are intended to liven up the wheel bays.  I scratched out many of the parts based on photos of the Eduard sets as seen next.

The Eduard set for the tail wheel bay.

My effort at duplicating Eduard's tail wheel set.

The Eduard set for the main wheel bays:

Here is my scratch-built wheel bay:

I also found a photo of this area on a real Ventura that features some kind of piping or tubing running out of the tank and into the strut sub-structure.  I figure that is a tank of something like brake fluid but I never found any statements as to what it truly is, but here is how I duplicated that on a nearly-complete wing.

Instrument panel.  I used the kit parts.  The instruments are a decal from the kit decal sheet.

Finally, I did not really like the decal options.  I did not want that freaking green octopus on this bird; plus that decal looked like it would be problematic at best.  So I went looking for aftermarket decals and found a sheet called "Sirens of the Sea". This sheet features several ladies in various poses and with little to no clothing.  I chose the "Blond Blitz" option, which from what I was able to find via a video that I found just a night or two ago of actual war-time footage, was a Ventura that operated out of the Solomons in about 1943.

So on to my build photos.

Paints for this were Vallejo acrylics - dark sea blue and US Navy blue gray, and PollyScale (I think) for the underside - dirty white.  Weathering with Flory wash and MIG Products wash.  The exhaust stains are Model Master Metalizer exhaust with some Tamiya weathering compounds mixed on top of the paint. I used a toothpick and a mostly steady hand to paint the yellow stripes on the bombs.

I really enjoyed building this bird.  The only problem area was the bomb bay doors.  They are a bit fragile and difficult to get into place; at the end of the day I lost patience with the Tamiya liquid cement I typically use and just put a dollop of CA to get those doors to stay in place.

Another praise to sing for this kit is how Revell did the wings.  There is a decent wing spar that will slide into the wings.  The wings also have small stubs to insert into the fuselage. But what really stands out is that there is a shallow recessed area to insert the wings into, which aided in painting and construction.  I did not attach the wings until after everything was painted and weathered. I wish more kits would come like this.

Nice!.  I have this kit in my stash, and you did it proud.  Just beautiful.  Thanks for sharing and I'll have to save this one one for reference when I build mine.

Nice! I've been curious how well this kit goes together. I really like your scratch built details! They give a little extra something, and I like it. :)

Outstanding Ventura. You did quite a remarkable job on it. Wonderful detailing. I like your approach of scratching based on PE pics. Nice touch. I've always liked the Ventura and purchased this kit soon after it was released as it was one of the number one requests I kept making on any survey for manufacturer wishlists at the time. I look forward to building it. The Eduard Hellcat also fits the wing into a recessed slot and indeed, it is an excellent design. My father flew the Ventura and, well, he wasn't overly fond of it. Thank You for sharing.

Great Job, Sir! I'll be moving it up on my "to do" list. That octopus decal always scared me off. Yours looks 100% better w/o it.

Fantastic job on this one of my favorite aircraft. Yes Beer

Your scratch-building approach is very inspirational, it's one of those "why didn't I think of that " moments.

ROG has a newer issue of  this kit without the octopus scheme that I intend to get it in the near future.  I have 3 ,1/72 kits in the stash ( Mini Craft and Academy ) but my old eyes would  rather do the 1/48 .  I just hope I can do near as well with mine as you did with yours.

Thanks!  I actually was disappointed in my many searches for pictures of the Ventura, as there simply were not very many of them out there.  I usually am able to turn up much more than I did with this build.  And what I did find inevitably was someone's build using that dad-gummed octopus decal.  I would be honored for you to use my build as a reference for your own future build.

Thanks a bunch Mike! The detail OOB was actually really good given this is not one of those super expensive Tamiya 1/32 kits or what-have-you, so I could have easily just built it right OOB and not given it a second thought.  But sometimes it's just a good challenge to go ahead and do something extra.

I also have had the Ventura in my stash since its release.  I'm not really sure what prompted me to yank that box out of the stash but I am glad I did.  It is a great kit, even greater when you consider its low cost. I also have that Eduard Hellcat kit, so I'm glad to hear that it has the recessed wing join feature.  That kit, along with my Hasagawa and old Monogram blue box Hellcats, are tentatively scheduled for an appearance on my workbench later this year.

The kit comes with other markings but none of those had any "wow" factor to them. I had to get the decal sheet I used from eBay, as I was unable to find any sheets at my usual on-line suppliers (Squadron, Sprue Brothers, Scale Hobbyist).

Thanks Jay!  I didn't set out to do a "why didn't I think of that" moment, truth be told.  I am still out of work, but was perusing web sites for after-market props - a MUSt for this kit, as the props are completely wrong for a war-time Ventura - when I found the PE sets that were going for $20 or so a pop. I didn't feel like parting with all that extra cash, and I easily could have just said no to any additional detail as the kit is well detailed right OOB, but I kept coming back to how much I liked the look of those lightning holes in the tail wheel bay.

Thanks Mike!

I cannot recommend this kit any more strongly, provided of course that you as a modeler actually have an interest in it.  It is just about Tamiya quality in terms of detail and buildability right OOB, but without the Tamiya price. There are other decals on the sheet included, another South Pacific Ventura as well as a Canadian Ventura.

Thank you Toshi!  The US Navy tri-color scheme used to scare me off as it always felt like a whole lot of work. I even opted for an overall dark sea blue paint job on a Pro-Modeler Helldiver I did about 15 years ago just to avoid doing a tri-color scheme. But now that I have done it on first a Wildcat and now this Ventura, it really is only a matter of proper masking. The results can be much better to look at.

Thanks T.B.!  Given my lack of current employment, it seemed foolish to spend roughly $40, oh, $50 when adding shipping costs, on a bunch of metal when I could just pull out the sheet styrene and do it myself.

As for what is next, I must say I am subject to being swayed by advertising. When they released the trailer for the upcoming movie Dunkirk, I decided right then and there that I am building a Spitfire, as it has been many years since I did Britain's most famous aircraft ever. Now which Spit to build?  I have Monogram's old Spitfire kit with all the working features, I have Revell's old 1/32 kit, and I have 3 Tamiyas, 2 of those in 1/48 and the other in 1/32.  That Tamiya 1/32 kit is the Mk. IXc, which is the one that I am leaning toward doing. I was considering another big multi-kit build but I think that with how hot it is getting already here in SE Texas, I'll be fortunate to do even 1 so it will be the Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire.

Hi;

Yeah on the heat deal . That's why I moved the work area of the bench inside . It squeezes me some but at least I am not sweating on the decals ! Right now I have , Beside my client's ship , four 1/144 aircraftunder construction .One in particular is the C-118 . (D.C.-4 ? )

It's going swimmingly , But , I keep looking at the The Supermarine Seafire and I am leaning toward her . That's the larger one . My biggest problem between my stuff , The Museum train stuff and all , time gets tight sometimes . Then it's up away from the bench and outta here . Well , catchya later . T.B.
