WWYD? Looking for suggestions for 1/32 scale cold war +
Posted by Slingshot on Wednesday, August 09, 2017 11:57 AM

Looking for suggestions for a challenging really well put together kit in 1/32 scale. I want to do something "big".

Current front runners are the Italeri F-35 II kit and the Trumpeter A-10 both 1/32 scale.

Does anyone else have a suggestion of something I should also be looking at?

70's era and newer combat Aircraft. (I was considering the bigger 1/16 Abrams Tank kit...but have a softer spot for Aircraft)

Thanks in advance.

If you like ordinance and a quirky look the A10 is great! I did the F-4E this spring and am doing the F-35 now. The F-4 is way more detailed and a fun build. If it's your first 1/32 I think the F-35 is a good bet because it goes together quick and fits pretty well. More details on the phantom than the lightning.

Ive heard the Tamiya F-4 birdcage is one of the best kits ever built. Might be a great one to jump on if you're into props.

On the bench - 1/48 Revell PT-17, and a 1/32 T-38 Thunderbird custom build.

In 1/32 for 70's and later Cold War, there are the 'Teen series superfighters from Tamiya, Revell, and Hasegawa: F-14, F-15, F-16, and F/A-18. There is the Testors/Italeri F-117, the Revell F-4G, F-4F, and RF-4C. And of course there are the Reds.. MiGs!!! Trumpeter makes a nice family of Mig-21s, and they and Revell both make a Mig-29. Revell also makes the other mainstay of Western Euro air arms alongside the F-16, the Tornado in 1/32. And Hasegawa makes a nice F-5E if you want the home team "bad guys". If you want to turn back a bit earlier, Italeri makes a nice new F-104 and Mirage III. Or there is the Revell Hawker Hunter (a gorgeous kit!!!)

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

I have a 1/32nd Academy F-16CJ that keeps hollering at me to be next (for the last 10+ years!!). That would be a good choice for you. Academy also has various versions of the F/A-18 Hornet in that scale.

Devil Dawg

On The Bench: 1/48th Hasegawa F/A-18F Super Hornet;  1/48th Eduard/Hasegawa Ultimate Sabre with "MiG Mad Marine" markings; Revell Of Germany 1/144 Boeing E-4B Airborne Command Post

Build one at a time? Hah! That'll be the day!!

Completed: AMT 1/537 USS Reliant

Academy 1/35 M1-A1 Abrams

Tamiya's F4C/D (have it and it is a nice kit),Revell's RF4C and F4E are from the 90's, but still buildable, their F4G is more recent.  And there is plenty of A/M stuff out there for all the Phantoms, from intakes, exhaust, pit PE, landing gear, etc.

Phantoms in 1/32 will build to about 24 inches long.

I have the trumpeter 1/32 MiG 21 F-13 in the stash and in the bow the detail looks really nice, reviews also quite good.

do you really want to do something different?  I mean something that next to no one has really done before?

Tell you what I would do....and this one is definitely on my list of next to get.  Get the Trumpeter 1/32 F-8E Crusader....then, go check out Fisher Models....Paul has put together a conversion kit to turn Trumpy's F-8E into an RF-8G Photo Crusader.....these were in service until the mid 1980s on USN carriers.  A VERY iconic Cold War aircraft....from the Cuban Missile Crisis, to Vietnam, almost right to the end of the Soviet Union.  Not to mention, the Fisher kit is an absolute work of art...

Comes with 6 decal options....1 is the a/c flown by CDR Eckert, Cuban Missile Crisis.  3 is an aircraft that was actually aboard ship with my dad in 1967, he was a plane captain with VF-13.  5 and 6 are both from the mid 1970s if you wanted to do a later bird.

Lots of people have done an F-4 or an A-10, those kits have been around for a long time in this scale now.  But next to no one has done one of these.....

EDIT--sorry, I misread that.  It does not come with the decals, but that sheet is available from Zotz.
