I had so much fun seeing my Planet XP-40Q get to the finish that it just seemed right to go straight on to the next in line P-40 variant. It's been pretty smooth sailing as I am just doing an out of the box build but with Eduard seat belts and this is such a nice kit. I've read that the aft cockpit insert can be a mis-fit, so I worked on that by removing some material from the mating surfaces of the fuselage in that area. I also assembled the tail sections to the forward fuselage parts so I could get a good fit there and that allowed application of glue from the inside. With the sides and top aligned there is a slight misalignment of some panel lines on the right fuselage half to clean up later, but they may be under the insignia decal.
I went through the instructions to find any other inserted parts but all I found were the lower gun panels, which fit very well and were glued from the inside. The instrument panel has a lot of relief, like the real thing with panels at different levels and some instruments recessed and other sticking out of the panel. I used the alternate decals without the black surrounding areas and had pretty good luck, probably because I used Mr. Mark Softer. Not much was happening with Microsol. Good enough for my 71 year old eyes. I wish I had leveled some of the switches on the mid level switch panel, I didn't realize that Hasegawa had molded the switches on them.

Do any of you guys know what the vents are for outboard of the gun inserts on the lower wings? See the last picture on my first post.
I can’t say without looking in a book. But they are present on my P-40F kit as well...

I just looked it up- bomb racks. Starting with the P-40E-1, there were rack attachment points there for small bombs. Or a cover plate could be fitted there.

Not backwards so much as all over the place, as usual.
This is actually the second N I have done in the last 20 years or so, the other was the Hasegawa 1/72 kit that had all the international insignia. And I have a Special Hobby 1/32 P-36 and a Monogram 1/48 P-40B also in the display cases. Maybe I will do a P-40F or L before I burn out on P-40's, who knows. Anything but go back to work on the Monogram/Lone Star B-26 I also have underway. I do need to do something on that one or two days a week, I think I'm suffering from PE fatigue on that one.
I have the neutral grey and some of the ANA 613 OD on the Hasegawa N, prop painting is in progress. I was surprised to find that the canopy parts which are in three sections are a little too long to fit, at least the way I have things put together. Of course I figured that out after gluing on the windscreen and aft section, whereupon I found that the funny shaped sliding section wouldn't fit. I filed off some material from the back edge of that section and it then fit, but the intelligent way to deal with it would have been to test fit and remove the errant material from the back of the aft canopy section, or better yet take some material off of the back of the aft cockpit plug, which actually would improve its fit to the width of the fuselage.
I've also gotten some Accurate Miniatures P-51 wheels adapted to the Hasegawa struts and painted them. I understand the N used those wheels which are smaller than what is in the Hasegawa kit.

Decals complete. That big decal on the nose required holding my mouth just right.

This one is in the display case, it has been a fun build. At the bottom, some photos next to the Monogram AVG P-40. I think the bird on the nose may be a parrot, I had a Red Lored Amazon that had somewhat similar coloring way back when, long story you don't wanna know. You did not want to underestimate the power of that bird's beak!
There's a lot of photos, partly because I built it so I could display it closed cockpit with the Hasegawa hood and open using a Squadron hood, the vacform canopy section fits much better in the open position.
I used some wheels from an Accurate Miniatures P-51 kit on the P-40N as that was what they used instead of the wheels in the Hasegawa kit which are the usual larger standard P-40 wheels and tires. Quite a difference compared to the P-40B. The difference in the depth of the fuselage between the two is also very apparent.
Two great looking birds there John. The parrot nose art really adds a lot of color.

Very nice job on both those birds. Gotta say, that parrot head is a real show stopper. Could not have been easy to get those decals on and looking so good! Great job!!

Thanks, Dwayne. Yes, the mouth had to be held right while putting on those decals. It helped to make sure they were very slippery on the decal paper before trying to move them, and then keeping a lot of moisture under them until they were in place correctly. Easy to stretch them out of shape!
Note: The next paragraph is out of date as I have re-photographed all of the finished model pictures with the frames corrected.
(One more photo to correct an error I made on the aft canopy framing, as it is only the top longitudinal framing that is inside and is glued on plexiglas. The two vertical frames are straps over the outside and are metal, and should be painted. Took it back to the paint shop and painted them.) In the process the pitot tube went south so I made up a new one with .032 music wire, some scrap pe, some soldering, and some filing to shape. Actually I smashed the end of the music wire with a hammer to get that flattened part on the front, then pointed it with the bench grinder.
