1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D Exhausted
Posted by fightnjoe on Saturday, October 3, 2020 2:12 PM

Well it has been a while hasnt it.......

Been so focused on a Spitfire I finally decided I needed a change of scenery.

1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D.

This will also be a cut away but I now have an issue.  I need to build my references.

For now I have begun on the engine.  Lets see how she goes.

Here we go.

A short update on the 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D. Much of my build time has been spent trying to get the structures ready. The kit has zero detail for a firewall. There is minimal in the cockpit, much of it wrong. As with a majority of kits there is nothing to the rear past the cockpit.

Referring to photos from a Google search as well as photos the folks at the Igor I. Sikorsky Memorial Airport and the Vought Museum have allowed me to save, work progressed slowly.
The engine and bay detail will have to be scratched. First up is to fashion an engine mount, no picture, sorry. This is to allow me to position the engine and other detail.
Detail work has also begun on detailing the engine. Also playing with where to make the cuts.

Please, all comments, critiques, and criticism are requested.

That looks very ambitous Joe. I'm glad I popped on to find it. =] I'll be happily following along when I can.

What kind of plans do you have for this one?

Actually none at all.  Kind of letting the build guide me.

Thank you for looking in.

Just a short update.

This again is the 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D.

Progress to show.

Spent some time roughing in the exhausts. Still much cleanup to do. The toughest part was trying to mock it all up.

I also did more to the engine mount. More to do there as well.

Joe, I have some brilliant pictures of the Dana Bell variety that would aid your scratch building of the engine compartment if you'd like?

Small update on the 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D.

Work continues on the internal structures.  This time is the seemingly complicated induction system.  The airboxes are put together with two types of thin strip.  By stacking them I am able to better imitate the real thing.  May have to try that sometime on engine cylinders.

Also working on the two intercooler stacks.  I stacked three pieces of strip and then chopped them into angled sections.  These were glued together and mounting pins added.

Lots of cleanup to do but this gives me something to work from.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are requested.

A little progress to report on the 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D.

Still roughing the structures in. Oil tank, water tanks, oil tank, and hydraulic tank. Next up is to redo the piping for the intercooler and air intake.

I mocked it up with school glue.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are requested.

Well some progress on the F4U. Seat and frame, rudder pedals and assembly, and still tweaking on the intercooler plumbing.

First how about overall.

And then a few of the details.

Next up will be to try to sort the intercooler plumbing and the gear casing.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.

Its Christmas Eve and all through..........nah.

More like Boxing Day, electrical boxes, distribution boxes, junction boxes.  The modification of Trumpeters 1/32 F4U-1D continues.

Kit parts are the instrument panel (2 parts and 1 piece of film)..... well....yep...just that.

Working on the boxes so that I can get started on the electrical.  Putting off the hydraulic until I can work up the energy to tackle the knotted nest.

More hopefully in the next couple of days.  And yes I did pull it apart again, this time to make the construction easier.

The last three days have provided some needed rest but also some decent progress on the 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D.

More boxes and assorted detail as well as some sub assemblies received attention.  Hydraulics, oil system, and electrical have begun.

Pictures tell it so much better than I can.  Besides I have some electrical diagrams to go over.

1/32 Trumpeter F4U-1D

An update.  Version 3.0 is slowly coming along.  Spar along the firewall is done.  Detail for aft side of the firewall is done.  Detail for the aft side of the front frame of the cockpit is done.  Three electrical boxes are done.  Rudder pedals are near done.  Foot railings are done.  Detail of cockpit walls are started.  Still so much to do.

Well;

I'll tell you what! I like what you're doing. I am enjoying every bit of it! I scratch Build a lot and it's because I want to, not because I have too!

Well after entirely too much time I am moving forward.

The cockpit still needs a small set of levers and the throttle and its connectors.  Other than that it is time to move on.

The kit parts are three for the instrument panel and the two fuselage sides.

Joe, you've been busy. This all looks great. I'm particularly excited about how you chose to build up the air dam to the intercoolers. Never occurred to me to sand them in to shape like that. Hats off to you sir. I think that and the fuel tank are my favorite things going on here. Very cool. Love the plumbing as well. Very ambitious!

keep it up. =]

Many many thanks.  Honestly I picked that up from another build.  Looked easier than what I was thinking so I went with it.

This is one of those classic examples of a "where do I stop? " moment. Unbelievable details Joe. You've got a patience that very few of us in the modeling realm have. Good to see you back at it.
