I have a paper model of the Phantom - it's in 1:33, so it's almost exactly as big, maybe I'll get to building it one day...

Yes it’s quite large and hope I have enough paint in hand to cover this beast.

The kit has the later outer wing  style so some sanding, cutting and scribing was done to bring them back to the earlier style.

I found a couple of more pictures that didn't get deleted earlier. 

The forward fuselage section has a great fit to the main rear fuselage. I added a huge hunk of lead up front to make certain it does not become a tail sitter. Here I was fitting the beautiful resin pit.

the IPs and pit sides were painted using enamels. Drops of Testors clear parts cement were used for the instrument glass.

Nice job on the wing work.  I opted to trade my late wing for an early wing (1/48 Hasegawa) to avoid all that work.  I fortunate to find someone who was looking for the swap.

The IP looks great - at first glance I thought they were those new Quinta Studio sets.

The resin set is from Legend. Very well made and detailed. I'm presently working on the ejection seats now.

Here are some shots of the joins with no putty used just Plast I Weld and a Touch N Flow applicator and big clamps.

The Plas I Weld discolored the plastic where I pooled it to blend things in but sands out great

Wallabaloo, THIS is a major project that is really progressing well Ernie. The pit details are super realistic, any F-4 drivers out there will love seeing this one. I will be following this closely, thanks for the post and photos.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and spent time with family.

Got some spare time and started painting the missiles, gears and other white colored parts.

The gear wells got a coat of Tamiya white gloss 

The marble coat went on. Next will be layering the SEA colors to let some of the marbling peek out giving the paint tonal changes.

The underside was also marbled to help get a worn and dirty finish.

I almost forgot to remove the elevator reinforcement plates found on the later and upgraded Phantoms. This one being an early E did not have them but did have the upgraded gun muzzle that prevented gas ingestion into the side air intakes causing the engines to flame out.

Thanks cb. The Legend resin pit is quite nice. I had taken several pictures of the painting process but got accidentally deleted. I was able to find this one showing the nice molded side panel details.

This is a commission build and the customer is not interested in the extra cost of super detailing the pit so the back of the rear panels got some free minor scratch work. Once painted black it will blend right in and will make it look busy enough. That area is screaming for tons of wiring.

Thanks cb. Been working on Aim 9 missiles today. The SEA uniform will be on soon. I have the AK lacquers on deck and ready for spraying.

Got the Aim9s painted white and ready for destailing.

Hey, I have a questions about the AK paints. Now that MM has gone bye-bye, I'm looking for a paint line to switch too. I don't like using acrylics and was looking for other enamels or laquers. I have a few projects that I want to start that I'll need to buy some paints for. I've heard good things about AK's Real Color line and am curious to know what you think.

Like you I'm not too exited about acrylics like Vallejo. My favorite paint is Model Master enamels but the stash is shrinking, had to throw away two new bottles cuz they turned into rubber. I will miss them dearly once I'm out of them. 

I'm actually using Mr. Color lacquers so apologies for the mistake but I have AK acrylic lacquers in the stash and will eventually use them. Have heard great things about them and should spray as well as the Tamiya paints.

Mr. Color lacquers spray very well thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner. Great coverage with no clogging . I like how these paints perform.

The colors are on. I used my Neo for the rough outlining and the Sotar to sharpen up the feather edges. The Neo does a fine job but the Sotar delivers a super tight feather line.

I totally forgot about a small drawer in my man cave having several Model Master enamels that I grabbed before being discontinued. I'm using a combo of MM enamels and MR. Color Lacquers. They both spray out the same and are a joy to work with.

 Alclad will be next for the nmf parts.

Shot multiple coats of Future to prepare the surface for decals and washes. Need to mask to spray Alclad on the NMF areas first.

Finished striping the Sparrows last night.

That's looking sharp! Love the camo and the demarcation lines. Interesting that you posted some info about your airbrushes. I had been in the market for a new "detail" airbrush, and the Sotar 20/20 was on my research list. Turns out, I pulled the trigger on one (no pun intended) over the weekend, and it should be landing in my mailbox today. Nice to read (and see) that it gives nice tight lines. Any other info or thoughts you'd like to share on your Sotar?

I love how well the Sotar performs with lacquers and enamels. I thin the paint a good 50/50, lower the air down to 10-8 psi and set the trigger control to get a SUPER tight feather line. It takes a little practice but man it is just an awesome airbrush, super easy to clean too.

Can’t comment on using it with acrylics like Vallejo yet.

Thanks for the 411. I mostly spray enamels and lacquers, very rarely acrylics, so I'm excited to give the Sotar a try. Now, I just gotta build something...
