1:33 Paper model of Avro CF-105 Arrow - done long time ago
Posted by Pawel on Thursday, May 23, 2024 3:17 PM

Hello everybody!

20 years ago a friend of mine, who was fascinated by the Avro Arrow asked me to build a Polish paper model of this aircraft for him. I had to modify it a little to make it look better, then I photographed my baby and recently I got to scan the photos, so I thought I'd share with you. The model is 1:33 and over half a meter/ about 2 feet long. Here are the photos, I hope you like them:

Something a touch apt about a "a paper Arrow" or, perhaps poignant.

Excellent build.

Ditto on the "Excellent" build. Wouldn't know it was paper unless you told us.

Stay safe.

Dunno, it's so pretty we wouldn't know if it was made out of 0.080 AL sheets unless we wer told, too.

Hello everybody!

Thanks a lot for your comments and for your kind words! I'm glad you like my model, the friend I've built it for liked it a lot too, I also feel quite good looking at the old photos.

Cap'n - The Avro Arrow itself is a bit of "paper" in the sense "paper panzers" were. Maybe a paper model is especially fitting in this case?

I'm always trying to advertise for paper models a bit, arguing that many times they can give you a subject and scale that can't be had in plastic. Paper models are also an excellent training of scratchbuilding and problem solving.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day

That looks great. Did you source the landing gear from a plastic model?

Kind of reminds me of TSR 2.

Hello Bill!

Thanks a lot for your kind words!

No, the landing gear is also paper, but reinforced with wire and soaked with thin CA. This way you can build landing gear that is both pretty accurate and strong, too.

If you consider that they started designing this aircraft in 1953 and the program was halted in 1959 it looks very modern for its times. It must have looked like a starship compared to other aircraft from these times. Fans of the Arrow say this project was killed because of political pressure from the Americans who got scared that they had nothing this good.

Have a nice day!

You've taken my concept of Paper Airplane to a whole new level, beautiful work.

Doubt I will ever have the nerve to jump into the paper scale modeling pool. Wish I had known about it when younger.
