FS numbers for Vietnam era A/C tri-color camo
Posted by Bossman on Monday, September 24, 2007 11:55 AM

Hello All,

I'm starting a 1/72 scale Fujimi F4-D and this is the first time I've painted a Vietnam era jet in the Dark green / Light green / Light brown camo scheme.  Fujimi lists the FS numbers for these colors as: 30219 for the Lt Brown, 34102 for the Dk Green, and 34227 for the Lt. Green.

For some reason - the light green looks way too light.  Can anyone confirm if these color call-outs are correct ?

Thanks,

Chris

The 34227 doesn't seem right, my refs call that an Israeli color.  I just did a Skyraider in the SEA scheme, it's pictured in a recent thread called "Warmonger Done".  I used 30219 Dark Tan, 34102 Medium Green, 34079 Dark Green, and 36222 Camouflage Grey.  The Model Master numbers I used are 1742, 1713, 1710, and 1733.

The correct FS numbers are, FS 34079, FS 34102, FS 30219, and FS 36622.

Bernie & John - Thanks for the enlightenment guys !  I figured it was wrong, but wasn't 100% sure.

You picked up on another error in the color descriptions that I didn't even question and I didn't mention.  They called out FS17875 for the undersides. (Gloss White)

By the way John - Yes, I saw your Skyraider, very nice job.  At a local air museum they have a  Skyraider that might be restored someday .  Whata hulking beast !  It just seemed huge.

Thanks Again,

Chris

These charts are always a good starting point to check colours:

well I plan on doing a F-4C in the SEA Camo scheme and one thing should be pointed out. The upper surfaces on some aircraft faded down to the original paint scheme. Which was originally the ADC Gray paint scheme.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

The first F-4C's were painted in Gull Gray, FS 36440 over gloss white, the same as Navy and Marine Phantoms.  Only the F-4C and RF-4C were painted in gray over white until 1964 when all aircraft started coming off the line painted in the SEA camo.

well Bernie seeing as my F-4 is the 1/48 scale Monogram F-4C/D Air Defense that I got off of Ebay. And it came with a bonus AeroMaster Early Phantoms in combat Pt 2. I guess I'll be building Steve Ritchies F-4D Phantom (the one with the 6 kill marks)
