Me 323 'Gigant' finished- pics
Posted by Wirraway on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 7:47 PM

This is for the 'Heavy Lifters' Cargo Plane Group Build that has been running all this year and finishes Dec 31.  A german airfield in Sicily, April 22nd, 1943.

A little background first.......Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

April was a black month for KGzbV in Sicily.  only 4 days previously, on April 18, the KG had lost 24 JU 52's over the Mediterranean, with another 35 aircraft breaking up after forced landings.  The allies knew how crucial it was to stop the flow of supplies to the Afrika Korps.  To hold the Tunisian bridgehead, Axis forces needed at least 150,000 tonnes of supplies a month.  Since December 1942, re-supply had never averaged more than 75,000 tonnes per month.  In March, this dropped to 51,000 tonnes.  Gasoline was dangerously low, the food ration in some sub-units was down to two pieces of bread per man per day.

Things got no better this day for the KG, with the flight of 16 Gigants attacked by Spitfires and Marauders off Cape Bon.  Only two Me 323s escaped, the others being shot down or broke up after emergency landings.  One more was destroyed on the ground at Tunis, during an air raid.  Only one aircraft managed to make the flight back to its Sicilian base at Trapani, filled with German wounded.  Of the 140 pilots and aircrew, 19 had survived.  In less than a month, the German dream for the conquest of North Africa would be over.

This is the old Italeri 1/72 Kit.  With Academy and Airfix vehicles and Preiser and Airfix figurines.  Only my second diorama, and the 2nd largest plane I've made, after my Superfortress.  I cant say I'm 100% happy with it, but I think I'm getting (slowly) better.

Getting sick of black & white ?  Me too.

Comments always welcome.

Yeah, I've got a comment, "GORGEOUS!"

Excellent and compelling, all-around. LUV IT!

...I read an article years and years ago about the transport slaughter over the Mediterranean Sea. I think it was in Air Classics.

You're not 100% happy with this?? Confused [%-)] If I could build a diorama anywhere close to as good as your Gigant diorama, I would quit my day job and model for a living. OUTSTANDING job on this one!! I love it!

That is very nice indeed. I've been trying to get hold of this kit and the 321 glider. I only have 1 negative point, and thats the fuel truck. If i am not mistaken, thats from the academy set. As far as i can gather, that tanker, the T-Stoff one, was only used for the Me 163 komet and V-2 missiles. A bit decieving of Academy to do that.

But that takes nothing away from the quaility of your dio.

Trexx, Nam, TempestJohnny, DevilDawg, John, Frank,  Thank you !  Always a bit daunting to post pics.

Bish -  yeah, I know what you means about that S-TOFF tanker.  It was the only one I could find.  Does anyone else make one ?  A neat little kit though. That Me321 kit is still around - I picked up the old Testors kit on e-bay for $19 + shipping.  Going to use it with a He 111 zwilling tug  - in another dio.

Really great stuff, wirr. The incusion of the vehicles and figures makes the "gigant"ic scale apparent for the first time I've seen that built. Really nice. What are those round thingies under the wings, outboard of the engines?

My F-in-law has a pic he took after the ground crews in his squadron got out of a C-47 after an 8 hour flight from Tunisia. A long line of guys with their backs to the camera, legs spread...

Bill,

Those are the JATO rockets to assist in takoff.  There are reports that sometime these suckers were still on the deck after 2,500 feet of runway.  You'd be a brave man to crew one of them I reckon.

It looks great Wirraway!!!!! Well done mate!!! I had thought about getting that kit ,but wouldn't have anywhere to put it. As it is, I have a DC-6 I have to fit somewhere!!! Good to see this build! If I may ask, what are the dimensions of the base?Thumbs Up [tup]

Scorrpr2, Bondo, Yardbird, Marc.  Thanks again guys !

Richie-  the wingspan is about 30 inches.  The dio was 26 x 22 inches and the wings just fit in diagonally.  Just too big for the shelf.

The only injection German fuel truck i have found is by MAC distribution, but at £12 its a bit pricey, but cheaper than going resin. Its a pity because the bomb loader in that Academy set is a nice peace, i am thinking of makeing a mold from mine and makeing some from resin.

Given the amount of German kits around and the amout of detail sets, the airfield equipment is rather dissapointing.

I have done the 111z years ago and i am lookign for another one of those also as mine is in bits. That will be a big dio.

Seriously though, absolutely first class!

I didn't know Italeri made a Gigant kit; is it OOP?

Red13Bar it seems to be at the moment. It seems to be one of those kits that goes in and out. I recall it being around when i first started 20 odd years ago. They also do the 321 glider version and the He 111Z glider tug. All seem to be OOP at the moment.

Beautiful! Absolutely fantastic! I hope mine turns out half as good as that! Thumbs Up [tup]

As for the tanker, you are in the clear, my friend. The RATOs used T-Stoff fuel.

Cheers,
Alex

Beautiful stuff.  I want to build both versions of the Gigant- a standalone Me 323, such as this, and an Me 321 as part of a dio to compliment a "secret" build I have going on right now....  Evil [}:)]

Still, awesome work, and a definite source of inspiration.

Mike, Mucker, Red13Bar, Mattsix, Mark, Rick, Dave- Thank you.

Alex-  thanks for info on that tanker, good to know

Lucien- from a modeller of your standing, I appreciate it.  Your motorised Ju 290 was definately an inspiration to me.  My long term goal is to build every kit that has more than 4  propellor engines.

Built:  Gigant, spruce goose.

still to build- He111 Zwilling

                  B36 Peacemaker

                 Dornier DO-X

Still to buy:  Bv 222/238  Ju290

There was a ginormous 8 engined Tupolev the Soviets had in the 1930's, dont know if it was ever a kit.  If anyone can think of more- let me have it !
