unnamedplayer, I'd seen one caption to that picture as the "Taliban Catch and Release Program." Works for me!

No not me. I just found that picture on the internet. I was looking for some info one time and came across the picture. But I couldn't remember where I'd seen it. So I went to http://www.google.com/ ,clicked on 'images', entered 'C-17 carrier' and there it was.

This however is a real picture:

Besides the dust cloud...IT'S A FREAKIN' C-17 ON AN LHA!
I had seen a drawing years ago of 2 or 3 Air Force Phantoms lining up in the groove behind a carrier and all of the flight deck personnel were scrambling for the catwalks!

Actually, speaking as a graphic artist. :-)

The biggest give away is the increadibly sharp edge all around the dust cloud, especially where the image of the C-17 is making contact with the deck, it looks very cut out and paste.

I'd have cut out the dust completely and used a distortion pattern to mimic heat waves from the aircraft brakes and exhaust. I would also have used Photoshop's edge bluring function to smooth the merge line between the two images. I might have also used the airbrush function to place a bit, but just a bit, of white smoke coming off the contact point between the wheels and the deck.

O.K. enough nit picking, the picture is a great idea and I do like it :-)

I wonder what else they've tried to throw off of a carrier?

the biggest give away is that a C-17 has a wingspan about the width of a carrier deck! The thing would slam clear into the superstructure! 'Twould be funny to see them try it though! Imagine a C-17 trying to CAC from the deck!

U-2s on CVs

In mid-1963 the CIA initiated Project Whale Tail, the adaptation of U-2s for Carrier ops. The U-2 was actually an almost ideal aircraft for such ops, it's glider-like configuration enabled it to take-off unassisted when there was a high wind-over-deck factor. The Navy was rather receptive to the idea, but the USAF refused to partake and CIA birds were used.

The first flight was made on August 5th, 1963, from the Kitty Hawk (CVA-63). The takeoff was successful, but the landing attempts were less so, leading to the modification of three U-2As by the Navy. These mods consisted of stronger landing gear, a hook, and spoilers on the wing to cancel lift when the bird was over the deck. Designated U-2Gs, these aircraft carried N-numbers and Office of Naval Research markings.

The first successful landing occurred on March 2, 1964 on Ranger (CVA-61). There was a minor incident and the pitot tube was damaged, but the aircraft was repaired and flown off the carrier.

A few days later several CIA pilots conducted car-quals aboard Ranger, the result of which was the Navy recognizing 5 of these pilots to be carrier qualified.

The only operational flight took place in May of 1964. Ranger launched a U-2G to moniter nuke tests conducted by the French at Mururoa atoll, a test site in French Polynesia in the Pacific.

In November, 1969 trials of the U-2R took place aboard America (CVA-66). This version had folding wing tips.

The idea of a carrier-borne U-2 never gained widespread enthusiasm and, in the end, the official CIA history stated, "Aircraft carriers are enormously expensive to operate and require an entire flotilla of vessels to protect and service them. The movement of large numbers of big ships is difficult to conceal and cannot be hastily accomplished, while the deployment of a solitary U-2 to a remote airfield can take place overnight."

Funny picture! Not only did they land and fly a C-130 off the Forrestal, but a U-2 did the carrier thing as well. I think it was the late '60's and I can't remember the name of the ship...

Many years ago I saw a picture of an O-1 Bird Dog, taking on fuel from a KC-135, high over the jungle of Viet Nam. It was escorted by several F-105's in close formation. We actually had a maintenance officer convenced it was real.

The scale is just a touch off too, that guy in the foreground appears about 18 feet tall. And a C-17 would totally cover the deck of an LHA, they are much narrower than angled deck carriers.

Not to mention that the C-17 looks like its crashing through the deck not landing on it. (someone forgot to trim out the dust from the dirt strip) :-)

I remember a book about the Canadian Air Force I borrowed from the library years ago. There was this really well retouched photo of a CF-101 Voodoo on floats landing on a lake. The best part is that the photo predated Photoshop and other computer photo manipulation programs by several years. It was all manually retouched.

Wish I knew where to find that picture, I'd post it here for sure.

It's amazing what one can do with Photo-shop and some imagination. The C-130 on a carrier was real though, and it landed without assistance of a hook or arresting wire. It was an experiment to check the feasabiliy of using c-130s for carrier duty. The nose art on the C-130 read, "look ma, no hook"

We should do a poll, on this photo, " What is the biggest give away that it is phony?"

I'd say it is the fact that it is landing on an LHA, "Tarawa" style aircraft carrier. No angled flight deck, and the paint markings on the deck are for helos.

they did the same thing with a C130 in the 60's. I believe it was on the Forrestal.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.
