Finished 1/48 Monogram F-20
Posted by Fly-n-hi on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 1:17 PM

Hi guys!  I just finished this 1/48 Monogram F-20 (or F-5G if you prefer).  I started this kit about a 15 months ago for the Monogram Mafia GB but I missed the deadline by a mile!  Since then I've been working on it off and on.

Originally it had the USAF aggressor "lizard" scheme on it but I ruined the finish when I applied the flat coat.  Apparently, Mr. Super Clear Flat and Future don't get along.  After I ruined it I decided to go with a different aggressor scheme, stripped it and started over.

Obviously this is a "what if" model.

I added a few things:

  • The HUD is scratch built
  • I lost the nose gear door and scratch built a replacement
  • The anti collision lights on the tail are scratch built
  • The inert AIM-9 is from the spares box
  • The AN/APX-95 is from the Hasegawa weapons set
  • The decals are TwoBobs decals
  • The gun barrels are scratch built from brass tubing
  • The wingtip missile rails are from a Tamiya F-16 kit
  • I added a hydraulic line to the nose gear

Well, here it is.  Hope you like it!

Awesome looking paint scheme! Really makes you're F-20 stand out.

Yeah, looks so good it ought to be a real scheme!

Just a great job all around!

I appreciate that!  But it is a real scheme:

F-5E with tiger stripes

I took a little bit of artistic liberty with the stripes but I tried to mach it as best I could with the reference I had. The lines of the F-5E and the F-20 don't completely match up...like the tail for example.

Ah, my mistake. When I saw 'what if' I just assumed is was your own creation- sorry! Embarrassed

That's ok.  The "what if" part is the F-20 instead of an F-5E.

That's what it would have looked like had the Navy purchased the F-20,. which was part of Northrop's advertising push. You did a phenomenal job on it. Congrats!

Fantastic work on the F-5G. it really dawn to me that its a Monogram kit! The Lizard scheme is much better the second one in my opinion. Congrats!

Sharp as a tack & very nice!

2nd rendition blows the 1st completely out of the water - not that there is any water involved, but you get my drift....

I have to agree that I really like the "tiger" scheme much better.  Well done!

So any chance Mongram/Revell might re-issue the F-20?   I sold mine a few years ago in a  purging of the stash and now I regret getting rid of it.

I would say that it is a very slim chance at best. Revell does seem to be issuing most of the old line up of kits in their inventory, but seeing as how this was a demonstrator/prototype aircraft only, and interest is not all that great, I think it will be a long shot for a re issue.

Yeah, I think Stik nailed it.  I just don't see the F-20 being reissued. If it was, though, I'd get one!

If you could get enough interested folks to let Monogram (I ain't usin' the "R" word) know, they might do it. You could get 'em pretty cheap on ebay or at the shows. The quality of the plastic would probably be better, too.
