My Tamiya 1 32 Spit on the way :)
Posted by Newtothis on Friday, December 27, 2013 7:55 AM

It was only ever a matter of time before I picked one of these up, being difficult for any spitfire fan / modeler to resist.

I'll definitely finish it, but it'll take a few months (I go pretty slow).  I'll do the thing and post progress shots.  Here are my first.  Pardon the 5c coin, the photos are also for friends who don't know about model scale.

I don't like the way I've done the flight stick on this but I've ordered a resin one anyway... so I'll replace that.  The scratches on the controls are more pronounced in the photo than they seem in real life, but I think I'll smudge them all down a bit - it's all just done with water colour pencils, so I can still change it here and there very easily.

Very nice work so far.

I want one of those 1/32 Spitty kits someday.   Tamiya is really knocking them out

  1/32 Revell Duo Discus
  1/32 Revell ASK-21
  1/48 Ardpol SZD-51 Junior
  1/48 Czech Models Grumman Goose
  1/144 FineMolds Millennium Falcon

Yep, it's a high water mark.  I hope Tamiya do well out of it, which will mean more like these.  The trouble is, of course, the expense.  But with digital tech coming to companies in who knows what ways, maybe that could come down too.  Surely mapping an old plane isn't quite the job it used to be, with CAD programs better than ever, etc, etc.

I've heard an awful lot of good things about that kit - your work looks very good so far.

Brett Green produced an excellent book on his build of that kit - I've got the book - it's worth every penny.

Keep up the good work, mate.

Here is the instrument panel with seat attached.  I can't get my details as good as some of you guys yet... I'm trying to improve but some of you set the benchmark very high ;)

I'm trying a trick with this kit... I'm adding tin foil to a few select panels, so that later on I can chip some paint on those.  You can see the foil in these shots.

The Tamiya kit is really brilliant.  Here is a shot of a bit of plastic reinforcing that goes in to keep the wings aligned.  I decided to make sure it stays in...  ;)

An undercoat of slightly lighter paint went on, then I hand-airbrushed the blue, masked it up and put the green on.  Here is my son Charlie who helps me sometimes.  (He's making a 1/72 Messerschmidt right now).

I'm obliged to do a bit of the weathering at this stage, even before transfers - removing salt and such.  You can see already that the foil is working pretty good, and there is the lighter paint visible too.

The cowling is just loose right now - temporarily glued, with no engine underneath.  It'll fit better later.

The only thing you have to watch out for: masking tape (even Tamiya tape) lifts dried paint off foil.  So you have to be careful about where you place it and/or masking tape placement.

Newtothis, not sure why, but none of your pictures are showing up. The first couple of posts to this thread have pictures, but, after those, zilch................

I'm not seeing any pics either, other than the earlier ones you posted (which showed some very nice work!).

Ah, sorry guys... just noticed these pics aren't working.  I must have stuffed up my flickr account somehow.  I'll fix these up asap.

Hey all,

Sorry, I fixed the photos in this thread now.  I've no idea what happened to my last flikr account... but it's all there now.  I edited the previous entries (now with working images) so as to not repeat myself.

I've finished this project now (pretty much), so I'll load up some finished shots.

Hi again.

I finished it!  (pretty much).  Sorry to cut right to the chase, but I've been busy with non-modelling related work, unfortunately.

Here are some shots.  You'll note I haven't been very historically accurate.  For the engine, I used colours of a contemporary spitfire, because I liked the contrasts more.  And the weathering may or may not be appropriate for this particular spitfire, but once I got started, well I was just enjoying it too much.

I do like the way the chipping on the small foil panels went, although I had some trouble with masking tape pulling the foil up later on.  I will probably use this technique again, but I will use a stronger adhesive next time.

Incidentally, this is a good example of how photos represent colour very different depending on the light (just noticed this now).

Anyhow, please enjoy.  Feedback welcome.
