1/48 Academy F-15D, 65th Agressor Sq. Desert Flanker Scheme

I am working on this build since the begining of august, but after an accident, i decided to work on others, before finishing this one. So after "finishing" my MIG-29UB, i have returned to this project, to fully clear my workbench, before starting others. Some more sanding and filling needed after his accident. I couldn't repair all the damages, what happened with this birdie, but managed to do the majority of them. After that some base paint spraying, and some white and + grey color applying happened to the small parts. (Plus for the missiles for the MIG build) Then made some pre-shading (sadly they vanished mainly under the base paint, but will highlight them again with post-shading later, how i did with the MIG) Created the camouflage map for this birdie, then printed out, and used it as a guide for paint border marking. And finally, made the base scheme today. This time i used Photobucket, as asked :). Because my "private" online server is still under maintenance.

Looks real good. Certainly more eye catching than the usual F-15 schemes.

But can somebody tell me how using F-16s and F-15s against F-16s and F-15s in different camo schemes is truly Dissimilar Air Combat Training? I know about different tactics used, etc., but a new paint scheme does not give the performance differential to the aircraft. Aside from using potential adversary tactics, when you're flying against an identical performing aircraft, half the point of Red Flag/Top Gun is lost.

Yso, what did you use for the panel lines after the camouflage coat?  It looks fantastic.

Stikpusher, Far from an expert, but I think at times the Navy and Air Force will train against each other or use aircraft generally indigenous to the other service (I think the Navy owns some F-16s and the Air Force some F/A-18s).  It's probably also possible to impose artificial performance limits (do not exceed climb rates, airspeeds, etc.) in any aircraft to simulate an opposing aircraft.  This doesn't work when the simulated aircraft would outperform our own though.  Mostly conjecture on my part.

THX Guys for your kind words.

Stikpusher: I don't know exacty why and how, i am not an expert too. (I leve far far away from USA. :) ) The camouflage schemes are folowing the recent soviet aircraft schemes, and that is all. During excersize they can be isentified easily, and i think during this the pilots are getting used to how the other side will look like when oposing in real combat. (Maybe)

But USA has bought some MIG-29 some years ago too. I don't know where they are. When Germany had some of them (Before they sold them to Poland), they tested how can they perform against F-4 and F-16 and such (Maybe F-15-s as well). The MIG-s outperformed them, and could get into firing position soon. But the targeting systems used are far worse, and couldt get a good kill ratio from their position.

RobGroot4: I used a dark dirt wash from FloryModels, then toned the effect down with the base paint mainly on the light brown areas.

Plus before appliing the wash, the paint got some layers of clear varnish too! (otherwise, the wash will "burn" himself into the matt paints) Or i can say, the whole process was: 1. appliing base white paint 2. pre-shade with a medium gray tone 3. base color apliing, light brown, than dark earth 4. color modifications - dark earth lightened a bit, and painted with it the middle panel sections, than light brown darkened with darker brown) and applied only on the panel lines. 5. clear varnish, two or three thin layers 6. apliing the wash and wait for driing 7. rubbing it back with a little moistured cloth (leaving it on the panel lines only) 8. tone down the panel lines with base paint

The decalling is almost done. (on the upper side, the lower is plain and empty at the moment, but will do it later...) Plus i have "done" the wing's pylons, to see how the load will look when finished. (They are temporary attached to the wings)

After finishing all the decals, will apply a clear varnish, then a matte one for final finish. For last the metal painting and the burner cans will be done.

Now that is a fantastic looking Eagle, it's my favourite American aircraft, painted in a way to look like one of my favourite Russian aircraft! Good combination in my eyes! Cant wait to see it finished!

THX Dean! Sadly i have a little free time at the moment for this hobby. :( (Not so say, i am waiting for new type of matt varnish too for finishing the camouflage..) After this, i will do the blue flanker sometime too. (Already done the digit one last spring, and won a medal on a contest with it. :) )

No problem, I wouldn't mind seeing the digital Eagle.
