World War I group build?
Posted by GreySnake on Saturday, January 4, 2014 7:09 AM

Hello guys, I've been kicking this idea around for a couple of weeks. July 28 marks a hundred years since WWI started. And I'm just wondering if anyone would be  interested in a group build?

The group build would start on July 28 2014 and end November 11 2015. To coincide with the beginning and ending of WWI.

Anything that took part in WWI would be open, just no what ifs. If enough interest is shown here I'll also put out feelers to the armor and ship's forum as well.

Just let me know what you guys think!

I think there is on on the go in the GB section, if not I will be in with something. I have a WNW Se5 in the stach and a WNW D-7 on the way that need an excuse to be built :-)

Theuns, you're right there was a group build feeler in the GB forum. But I think five or so people showed interest including me.

I may not have been clear on the datesDunce I figured since July 28 marks the start of the war it can end November 11 2015 ninety seven years since the war ended. I hope this is a little bit clearerCool

Yes, I think the GB hosted by  wingnut (Marc) was left open, no end date, but there should definitely be a special GB for the 100th anniversary.

Jack is correct, I did "The great War" GB way back. And while it was left open so to speak it is rarely visited now.   I also agree with Jack that a special GB should be set up for something as notable as 100 years since the start of the war.

Thanks for the interest guys! If we get a few more people interested I say we have a group build! I'll put a topic over on the armor and ship forum and see if we can get some bites over there.

Check out the latest FSM (Feb. 2014) page 42. Just got my copy and found these shots of the First WWI group build hosted by FSM in March 2013. Congrats to all the members that are included in the spread. Great builds. Toast Toast Toast

I'm waiting on my copy of the Feb. issue as well. Really can't wait to see it.  I know they usually take a bit longer to get to destinations north of the US border.

One thing I'm curious about, and that is, for how many of you will this be your intro to building a WWI aircraft? They can be quite addicting you know.  Wink

Interesting that you ask. For me, this will be the first WWI build since one of the very first models I ever made. A 1/72 sopwith camel...when I was 6 years old. So, kinda nostaligic for me, decades later. I'll go with a Fokker D VII.

Bang Head can't believe I am doing this, WW1 is not my thing and I never buy a kit for a GB. But my 0/400 needs an adversary, and with the time frame, I can defiantly make this, so count me in. No idea what yet, but it will be 72nd, not brave enough for one of those 32nd ones yet. Its currently between a Fokker Dr.1 and an E.III. I am thinking minimal rigging (I ain't that silly)

Mike, surprised you don't have yours yet. I am sure you will like it Wink

Bish, look at the revell 1/72 Fokker D-7 kit. It is very simple, but can build up nicely with the only rigging in the undercart.

That Fokker e-3 in 1/72 will be a "nightmare" to rig I think  ;-)

panzerpilot, a very similar experience for me as well. Before my age hit double digits (roughly 50 years ago), my neighbor showed me a fokker tripe he'd built. Can't remember the manufacturer (Aurora maybe?) - it was a gawdy burgandy color, but at the time one of the coolest things I'd ever seen.

Bish, I had a feeling you'd be dropping in for another one!  Excellent!  If you want to go easy on the rigging this time (wouldn't blame you a bit after all you put into that eye-popping  0/400), either the D.VII or the Dr.I are excellent choices.

Looks like we have plenty of interest in this GB!!

You said it PJ! Thanks everyone for making this build possibleBig Smile Later on tonight I'll make the thread over in the group build forum.

Bish, If you don't want to do rigging, how about the Roden Junkers D1?

Its comes in 1/48 or 1/72 and not something you see built often.

If you are thinking about the E.III, I built the Revell 1/72 a few months back.

It was my first time rigging and it wasn't that hard to do.
