Azure?
Posted by Theuns on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 12:02 PM

I need to do the 1/32 P-40b 's bottom Azure for RAF desert scheme.
Is there any "out the tin" standard color I can get from Humbrol, Tamiya, lifecolor or even if I need to acrylic that is close to Azure without mixing?

Thanx

Gunze has it out of the bottle. So does MM. Tamiya, no. It has to be mixed. Lifecolor should have it in the bottle.

I used to use Authentic brand of Model Master enamels - IMHO - it looks quite good

Vallejo model colour 71108 is an exact match for RAF Azure Blue for desert/med fighter scheme.

Also Vallejo Model Colour 70902 for RAF Azure blue

What a nice looking blue on that crystal!

Thanx guys, it seems very strange that this is suce a hard color for the paint guys to get correct.

That does however leave lots of room for my "interpritation" of azure ;-)

Well, this is my intrerpretation of azure. Basically HU 157 with some white in it.
Pic taken in direct sunlight. I think it is close enough.......what say you?

If you use Tamiya you'll want their XF18 Medium Blue and add a little white to it to get the right color.  Humbrol makes an "Azure Blue" but its too dark IMO.  They have a Mediterranean Blue which is more of what you want I think.

Thanx. that mix I made in the pic is the humbrol 157 azure with about 20% white in it. This is becoming a real pickle to get it right! I also realize it is rather difficult to judge a color from a pic of a small test piece.

There does seem to be a bit of a purple in azure:

If you feel like reading, there is a 15 page thread on the subject over at Britmodeller:

Defenately needs some purple in my mix then!  Just as a matter of interest, these early color pix, how acurate are they in reflecting the color?

Not that I am disputing it , just wondering :-)

Besides, that "purple azure" is a way prettier mix than mine  LOL.

I've noticed that it does have a slightly purplish tinge to it from the color chips I've seen and this photo it seems to lean that way as well.  I'd suggest adding a dash of red in with the mix.

Should check out the thread I had linked.  Don't have to read everything, but the poster does a stellar job of comparing model  paint brands to official color chips.
