P-38 rearview mirror in 1/48?
Posted by SchattenSpartan on Friday, February 21, 2014 3:04 PM

Hi guys!

I'm currently working on Tamiya's lovely P-47 Razorback and the machine I'm trying to recreate appers to have a Lightning's mirror attached to the canopy. The Tamiya kit unfortunately doesn't include that type of mirror and my P-38 kit (Academy) has none either. Is there any AM set that includes this mirror or do
I have to scratchbuild it. If so, what's the best way to tackle this task?

And a better picture of the mirror:

Snip off a chunk of clear sprue, sand it to form the curve side, and sand flat the mirror side, then mask off a small square and paint the rest once you glue on the canopy. Of course, this is just an idea in my head. I haven't built something like this before.

That's what I'd suggest also Clemens. I always have a bad habit of losing little pieces like that too as I'm working on them. I might suggest you drill a tiny hole thru the bottom where you could insert a pin or small set of tweezers in order to hold it better as you work it. If you wanted to get real crazy you might consider putting an alclad chrome coat over the mirrored part. =]  Just a thought.

You could also use a tiny piece of Bare Metal chrome foil to replicate the mirrored part.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a try. I don't have any bare metal foil at hand ATM, so I'll probably really go crazy and apint it chrome Stick out tongue

Clemens,

You might also try a small piece of putty or clay.  Shape it and glue it on, then you can use a small file, toothpick or dental tool to adjust it.  Brush some laquer over it till it's smooth and you're done!

PS> I did this one with a couple of pieces of wood.
