Looking for kit with exposed bits!
Posted by Newtothis on Friday, February 21, 2014 11:08 PM

Hey all,

I just finished my Tamiya 1/32 spit, and it was a real joy (what a kit!!)  .

I'm hoping to find a kit which will allow for exposed inner detail, whether this is by outer-panel removal, or some other means.  I don't want to do cut-away, but a simulated "servicing" is fine.  I am willing to try my hand at scratch modifications (did a little bit of this with the Spitfire).  I've found I'm not a fan of working on details, only to cover them up...however I love working on detail... so that's my conundrum.

I'm trying to think of what to do next.  I am a WWII fan but anything from the 50s or early 60s is acceptable.

I would love to attack a Revell Heinkel He 111, because it's such a good looking plane, but has all the glassy stuff.  But I'm wondering what I can take off it, to even further expose innards.

Otherwise, any suggestions of any planes which are screaming out to have bits and pieces taken off them, to show their insides.

Cheers!!

I would suggest the ZM kits of the A-1 or P-51.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

I second the Zoukei-Mura kits. I don't have the A-1, but the P-51 has all the internal structures included (even the fuel tanks in the wings) and the fuselage consist of several panels insted of 2 halves, so you can just leave off some of the panels and show all the details inside of the airframe.

If you fancy something a bit bigger, the forthcoming Airfix 1/24th Hawker Typhoon may be worth considering? Last I heard it was due out in June. Here are some a links with some photographs of it.

It looks quite something. The UK RRP is going to be £99.

Yep, I know the ZW models... pretty incredible.  There's nothing stopping me from going down that road, except that I just finished a fighter and was hoping one of you guys might suggest a really neat bomber, in 1/48 (or even 1/32 if it's not toooo big).  The more I look at the Revel Heinkel He 111, the more I think I'll get that, but the problem is I wouldn't know what goes on under any of the skin panels (including the engines), and I don't know of many good resources for that one.

And that Typhoon looks incredible.... but maybe too big!!  :)  The worry I have for going up to 1/24 is that it takes you to the next level in terms of referencing...  bits you might leave out, even on a 1/32, become worth considering... so that Typhoon could take, errr, ages  :) .

[edit] although, having looked at the pictures of the plain plastic build, it looks like airfix included a heck of a lot of detail.

How about HKM's B-25 kits then? They provide you with a nice interior. It's not as good as the ZM interiors, but you can further enhance it with some Eduard PE. The engines are two little gems and small kits on their own. All the cowling panels are separate pieces, so you can leave some (or all) of them off if you want to.

No problem. That's actually the same build report that made me buy mine.

HKM makes 3 different B-25 models:

  • B-25J "Bomber" - standard glass-nose bomber version
  • B-25J "Strafer" - glass nose replaced with a solid one containing additional machine guns
  • B-25H "Gunship" - features a 75mm gun mounted in the nose

Although... having located this site... I still consider the humble HE 111 an option...  www.bredow-web.de/.../heinkel_he_111_h-16.html
