Bending B-52 wing up for inflight display
Posted by Valkyrie on Sunday, February 23, 2014 9:37 PM

I was wondering if anyone had a trick to bend B-52 wings upward for inflight display.  I've tried fabricating a "stiffener" but tends to be too thick or not rigid enough.  Gave up on B-52G I'm working on and glued the wings together.  But, I'm starting a B-52H and am faced with the same problem.

If you are doing the AMT kits it's not an issue, the wings are molded that way.  The issue with them is building them with the right droop on the ground.

Assemble the wings, but, before attaching them to the fuselage, heat them with some moderately hot water for a few seconds, pull them out of the water, and immediately bend them to the warpage that you want, and run them under cool water. Repeat until you get the warpage that you want. Works in reverse for warped parts, too!!

Hi, jeaton01.  I am doing the AMT kit.  You know I did a dry fit several weeks ago using rubber bands to hold the wings together and they seemed to be sagging for a ground display.  They're glued together now and you are VERY correct!  I may not need to bend at all.  I guess at the time, in my mind, I was expecting to have to deal with the bend.  The last 1/72 B-52 I did was a D model and ended up doing a ground display because I could figure out how to do the bend.  Thanks for the quick response and the "calibrated" eye!

Hi, Devil Dawg.  Thanks for the quick reply and technique.  Funny thing, I just got a new pair of glasses and used that very trick to adjust the ear pieces.  Turns out that the wing is straighter than I though and I may get by without doing anything.  But, I'd like to try the technique, so I may put just a little bit more bend in the wing between the outer engine pylon and the wingtip.  One again thanks for the tip!!!

Hey, not a problem. That's what these forums are for. Hope your B-52 comes out just the way you want!
