P-51D flaps

Working on a mustang and going to have it posing with flaps down. Question is this, when I put the flaps on there is just a blank spot going into the wing where the flap would retract. I know this wasn't the case on the real plane, how do I remedy this? I was thinking perhaps a toothpick but have never scratch built anything or even modified a plane, so I'm a little apprehensive. It's an academy 1/72

Squatch,

The "front" of the flap (the part hidden inside of the wing when the flap was retracted) was curved.  See picture below.

If it were me, I'd probably go to my local hobby shop or craft supply store and see if they carried plastic strip stock with a half-circle cross section.  I'd cut out the flap from the wing and bring it with me so I could match the diameter of the half-circle to the thickness of the "front" of the flap.

Cut a length of the strip stock to match the length of the flap and voila!  Instant curved section to the flap.  Of course, do this AFTER you've purchased the strip stock.

I hope that helps.

Well the model has the option of flaps up or down, so they are already cut out from the wing itself. I have already put the wing halfs together and they are hollow, and you can see that with flaps down. I should have planned a little bit better but it didnt occur to me. But I like the idea of the half circle, I can put it in the wing so it doesnt appear hollow. I'll try to add a picture or two when I get home from work.

Pictures are always good.  Which kit brand are you making?  I haven't built a 1/72 Mustang in a long time.  Is it a Hasegawa?
