One of the Air Guard units did a retro scheme based on the P-51 from the group's earlier days. I can't remember who it was, though.
If you know which particular scheme you like, post a picture of it, it'd be much easier to find help or opinions when we know which scheme you are talking about.

I think that an F-4 done up in the P-47 mottle scheme would look pretty neat:
Do the intakes in either side in bright red and then the grey and green mottle for the rest of the body. Heck, why not even do the invasion stripes in the gap between the rear of the wings and where the exhaust start?

Gotta say - the P-47 paint job would look great on an A-10........ And they're both Thunderbolts!

Build one at a time? Hah! That'll be the day!!
I'm with the Dawg. What-ifs work better when there's at least a couple of meaningful links.
Manufacturer, unit, mission, era. Choose a couple.
That jug to an A-10.
That pony to a Vigilante.
Three shades of blue/intermediate blue/ gray on an A-7.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Agreed...that F-4 looks pretty sweet
