Stencil Color
Posted by Big Blue on Friday, February 28, 2014 10:57 PM

Hello,

As some of you in the 1944 group build know, I am in the middle of building an olive over grey P-47 (Lt. Neal Worley's "Mortician's Delight", B4*W), using the excellent Barracuda Hellhawks decals.  I have been applying the stencils, using the white text decals when provided.

The thing is... they really stand out!  I have not been able to find any reference photos that show any stencils (other than the one on the lowest cowl flaps which is white) for that aircraft, or any other olive plane in that unit.  I guess my question is, without a definitive photo reference, were the majority of the upper surface stencils really done in white in the ETO in mid to late 1944?  My understanding is that he received this aircraft in the summer of '44 as the 9th Air Force received P-47s from the 8th who were transitioning to P-51s.  I assume the aircraft would have been repainted at that time to match the unit markings.

Thanks in advance for any guidance,

Blue

Looking at photos of P-47s, mostly B&W, it is really hard to see any stencling on them. Just a few here and there on some aircraft, mostly around the lower cowl flaps and very small...

Thanks for looking for me, Stik.  I have noticed the same thing, and figured that likely means that they were done at all, they would have been in black paint; the white would be visible in at least some images.

Thanks again.

Yup. I can see some minor white stenciling in some those images. But it is minimal. Have you found any photos of your actual subject aircraft?

One or two; none very helpful.  Here is probably the best:
