1/48 KA-3B in-box observations
Posted by Darren Roberts on Friday, March 21, 2014 4:07 PM
I was up at Sprue Brothers today dropping off a Steel Beach restock and decided to grab the Trumpy 1/48 KA-3B release. The base kit is the same but with a few new sprues added. The new sprues contain parts for the KA variant which include the bay doors, hose reel, refueling pod, and basket. It appears that the basket can only be displayed in the extended position, and it looks to be more like 1/32 scale than 1/48. I'm not sure why a stowed basket wasn't included, since it would droop to the ground if it were extended. Did I miss the parts for the stowed basket? The other interesting nugget is that the parts are included for the EKA-3B. Yeah! I'll be building one of those in short order. Decal makers, you can start on decals for the EKA now! :-) All in all a nice release.

Is there a 1/48 scale model of the D-704 Refueling Store available somewhere?  I am asking because it looks like some Navair resin producer is going to have to make some stowed baskets for KA-3 fans, and the D-704 might be the best place to find a pattern to look at while carving something. You could sell them to KA-3B, EKA-3B and A-3B with refueling package modelers. (A-3B with package would be cool, open bomb bay doors, loaded with bombs, with the basket hanging down behind it)

Sometimes you need a break from Tomcats! I've got a replacement pod/basket in the Steel Beach line. I'm going to rework it a bit for this new release. It also has a corrected refueling vent tip.

I get mine for "almost free." In 1/72, they come in the Fujimi KA-6D kits, so, for each Tanker I bought, I got a D-704 for a Skyhawk, Corsair II or Skyraider model.

I will only ever need one for a KA-6D, as I intend to model only one of the Tankers with the Pod mounted for a back up.

I didn't realize that you already had the basket in the Steel Beach line, Darren. As you might remember, that is not my scale. I do think that a lot of people are going to want your improved part as a separate piece, just so they can finish a tanker sitting on the wheels. That is unless your whole set is better than the kit parts, of course.
