Build a larger WW2 1/72 (i.e. B-17 or B-25) or a 1/48 (F6F or FW190)?

I have returned to modelling after 30+ years.  I have buitd several 1/72 kits to get me back in the hobby.

P-51, Spitfire, BF109, AGM2B

I think I am ready for something a little larger.  Should I try a larger 1/72 kit (bomber) or a 1/48 kit (fighter).

I am willing to sacrifice detail for better fit and I only brush paint.

Let me know what you think and any recommendations.

Thanks, CCW

Probably tough to do a Luftwaffe fighter without an airbrush. Other than that, just build what you feel like, and post the pics here!

Good question!  I'm wondering if maybe a 1/48 fighter might be something good to start with.  In my mind I'm picturing a P-51 but you can insert your own single-engined fighter from WW2.  It's still a good size but not too big at all to brush paint.  I did an F4U-5N a year or so ago and I brush painted it.  It worked out better than I could have hoped.  I think I used a good quality 1/2" brush and the gloss sea blue came out with a mirror finish.

Best wishes!

Nathan,

Can you tell me why that would be difficult?  Is it the camouflage?  I just built a 1/72 Spitfire and hand painted the camo and it looks pretty good.

Eric,

That was kind of what I was thinking.  I love the F6F, P-51, and P-38. I am worried that the P-38 might be a bit complex at first.  I have been building Airfix and Academy kits right now because they are simple and cheap!  But I do love the B-17, B-25, and B-26!!

Let me know if you have any specific recommendations.

I meant for a scheme that calls for spots, or mottling. Now some 109Es had dense mottling applied with a sponge, which would work in the modeling world too. Sounds like your light years ahead of me in the brush painting world anyway. Good luck.

I don't think you can go wrong at all with the Hellcat, Mustang or Lightning.  Regardless if it's the three-toned camo of the early Hellcats or the overall dark sea blue that they wore, I think you'd have a fairly easy time handbrushing those.  I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to pick up an F6F.

For the Mustang, I think you'd be better off doing one up with it's Olive Drab over Neutral Grey scheme.  Same with the Lightning.  If you're going to do a natural metal finish, I don't think handbrushing it would look all that great.  Instead, if I wanted to keep it simple, I'd pick up a can of Testors or Tamiya silver.

Testors has an vast array of metalic paints in aerosol form.  The only unfortunate part is that they're a bit fragile in nature.  In other words, you can't mask over them lest you pull up the paint when you remove the tape.  You can't handle the plane much either or else the oils on your fingers will remove the paint or, at the very least, leave fingerprints on them.  The Testors paints do look nice but you really have to plan ahead when using them and perhaps handle the plane with an clean old T-shirt to avoid the skin-to-paint contact.

The Tamiya silver (AS-12) in the spray can is a bit more robust.  I've used it a couple of times and it worked well for me.

I hope that helps!

My advice to you is:  Look through some on line catalogs and/or stroll through some local hobby shops.

Whatever catches your eye or interest is what you should build...

Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Tamiya 1/48 Mustang pretty much falls together,  B/C or D, take your choice. Lots of OD over Grey options.  Prices are a bit higher than many, but you get your money's worth in avoiding nasty seams.

It had been about that long for me, when I got back into the swing of things late last year.  If you go 1:48, you may not go back to 1:72!!!  I did a P-51C at 1:72 and it turned out okay, but 1:48 is SO much easier on the eyes.  Now, a 1:72 Bomber might be a little different though.  Let us know!  I'm looking forward to seeing what you end up with.  Raymond

Thanks for all of the information and advice.  I am still deciding which way to go.  Pricing has a lot to do with it.  I can get several 1/72 kits for the price of one 1/48 kit.

If I go 1/48, I am trying to stay away from Revell because my memories and current reviews do not seem to be  that great (general statement).

Raymond,

I hear you about the scale difference.  With the 1/72, I am using a magnifying glass and break tiny parts!

I am doing some more research and will keep you all up to date.

How do I post a pic on here?

To post pics, you need to host it on another site and then link to it.  I use photobucket but other options exist like Flickr

Well, I decided to take the plunge...partially.

I had a 40% discount coupon from Hobby Lobby, so I purchased the Revell 1/48 B-25J.  I know it is big, but for $15 if I mess it up I wont feel that bad.

Just to have a fallback, I purchased an Airfix 1/72 BF-109G-6!

I will let you know how things progress.

Thanks,

CCW
