Revell 1/48 P-47N Thunderbolt score & a question
Posted by Tnonk on Saturday, May 31, 2014 9:30 PM

I scored a Revell P-47N Thunderbolt off the Hobby Lobby discount rack yesterday for 8 bucks.  I 'm not normally a fan of the Jug but for 8 dollars I thought it was worth a shot.

I almost passed on it because of the Revell Hellcat I had picked up recently. 1/48 scale also but undoubtably 60's era molding.  I wasn't impressed with the Hellcat at all. But I didn't have a Hellcat in the stash so it filled a gap (poorly, but filled it for now).

But I decided to give the Thunderbolt a try and I'm glad I did.  The Thunderbolt is obviously a newer molding than the 60's era reissue of the Hellcat.  It has engraved panel lines, a pretty nicely detailed cockpit and engine.  It also comes witha nice assortment of underwing stores and a nice sheet of decals.  A really nice kit, especially for 8 dollars.

My question on this kit is, is this a newer Revell mold?  It's obviously not the old Monogram kit (or did Monogram even put out an N Jug?) Just curious.

I passed on another couple of good deals at HobLob - a P38 and F5, both  1/48 scale and both for 6 dollars each.  Might have to go back next week & see what's left.

Think it is of 1997 vintage.  I have one in the stash also.  The Academy is probably a nicer kit, but this one is not bad.

I have them both. The Academy kit is not a better kit. The N was originally one of Monogram's ProModeler line. It builds up nicely and the cockpit is quite good without any aftermarket parts. Just my 2 cents worth.

Well, they're both good kits.  Here's some other opinions.

Thanks, I appreciate the responses.

I was out of modeling for a while and missed the ProModeler years.

I see them on ebay occasionally but have never had one.

I wonder if the ProModeler P38 is worth getting? I think I read somewhere that it is a rebox of the Academy Kit, Is that correct?

I'll have to keep my eyes open for a couple of the ProModeler kits.

Thanks again.

The pro modeler P-38 is a rebox of the Hasegawa kit. As are the pro modeler F-4E & A-4E in 1/48. Their 1/48 Fw-190s (D & G) are both former Tri Star kits. I think the Ju-88 in the PM line was a Dragon kit. But pretty much the rest of the PM line is original new tool R/M, or a few are older kits dressed up a bit to one degree or another.

It's a nice kit.  Two issues I had building mine were the fit of the gun inserts and the way the landing gear is done.  It has to be installed before you close the wing, and in the end is a little wobbly.

The ProModeler P-47 is a pretty good kit, I built one a few years back. Jeaton is right- the landing gear must be attached before the wing, mine weren't wobbly but they were a pain to mask. The other issue I had was that the top and lower wing halves attach in the middle of the airlons  rather than at the hinge. Weird engineering and a pain to putty and sand. Otherwise a pretty good kit as said though. I have the Academy version but haven't built it.

Here's a photo of mine showing the landing gear and the underwing seam:

And finished, I think she came out ok:

The Hasegawa P-38 has some fit issues but generally is also a very good kit. I've heard the Academy kit is about the same fit wise.

Gamera, your N Jug came out very nice! Can you post her over on the "Show your R/M builds" thread please, if you have not done so already.

I agree, she looks really great!  Man, I love the scenery at your place too; what beautiful countryside.

Um, thanks guys- you're going to think I'm posting as trolling for compliments but I really wanted Tnonk to know it is a pretty good kit and can be built up into a very nice model.

SP: Oddly I haven't posted her there. For some reason I keep thinking you wanted the traditional Monogram classics there instead of the newer ProModeler line. Still I guess it's still a Monogram either way!

Texgunner: Lol, thanks just rural SW Virginia countryside. Don't remember when I took the photo but everything looks yellow and dead- much prettier and greener now!

Gamera, ANY kit of Revell or Monogram lineage, old or new, is welcome there. From their old box scale stuff, to the latest release such as the Stearman or Ventura. From the classics to the latest.

I can't speak for the RM kit.  I've heard it has fit issues.  Here's my Academy N.  I loved it.  It could use an AM cockpit and blast tubes, but otherwise its a beauty.   The rocket stubs are molded to the lower wing for some reason.  You can shave them off (as I did) or leave them.

This plane now belongs to the the original pilot's (Oscar Perdomo) nephew.  I will build this one again..

Adrian, I know this is a little late, I have four of the Rev/Mono N's. As far as an "N" version goes it is the best. BUT, I don't like the pit, or the R-2800. The way the L.gear is installed so early makes you scratch your head also. When I finally get to them,{ I have MANY Tamiya - 47's to do first.} I plan on using an aftermarket pit. The kit does build well,so you should be happy with that. {Just my 2 cents.} - Bob

I had the same landing gear problem to overcome on the Revell F4U-4. I modified the inner wing to allow the wing to be built up and installed the gear when I was done and it allows for the gear to move if desired. It is not visible once complete as the mods are on inside the wing, so as to allow the gear to be fitted through the open bay. I have the PM -N in my stash and I will attempt the same approach on it as well to see if it is doable. I am with you guys when you say working around the gear while building is a real PITA.

Thanks for all the replies guy's.

I gotta be honest, I had gotten real busy a while back and completely forgot about this thread.

Glad Bob and Brandon commented and reminded me of it.

Those are some really nice builds Gamera and Lawdog, hopefully when I finally get to mine I'll be able to do it justice as each of you did.

Stik, Thanks for the info on the ProModeler P-38. I'm a big fan of the P-38 and I don't have the Hasegawa, so I guess that I'll have to add it to my stash also.

I take it from all the comments on the LG that it's the real main issue with the kit during the build. I think the pit and R2800 will suffice with a bit of tweeking with some wire and bits here and there.

Thanks for all the comments, I appreciate it.
