Blast from the not so distant past: 1/72 Matchbox He 115
Posted by rocker286 on Saturday, June 14, 2014 3:06 PM
I just can't keep myself away from the bench recently...and hey, that's not a bad thing! I dug a kit out of my stash that I've had for a while. It's the old Matchbox Heinkel 115 kit. I bought this from an antique store that has a nice selection of old model kits. The copyright date on the box is 1989, I was only three when this kit was originally sold on shelves! I can't help but wonder how long the kit in my possession had been on that antique store shelf before I bought it- and where it had been before that! Maybe I can't figure out it's past, but I know what it'll become in the future! I am not going to go overboard (excuse the pun) with the interior detail on this one...it was a very basic kit in it's day, and I think part of what's gonna make this build so cool is keeping it basic!

DSCF1418 Well here's a shot of what I'll be working with. You'll have to excuse some of the clutter- I've been in the process of moving and things are still where they shouldn't be. I ended up buying an Eduard mask for this kit because let's face it... pre-cut masks just make things a little easier!

DSCF1424 Cockpit floor and interior walls are painted, and so are the crew. I ended up using RLM 66 schwarzgrau for the walls and floor. I haven't been able to find a source regarding the interior color of the He-115- so I just winged it.

DSCF1428 Engines and props painted. I dry brushed a little Testors aluminum onto the cylinder heads. The props were painted with RLM 70 schwarzgrun.

Nice choice, will keep an eye on this. I have been thinking about getting the Revell boxing of this. So will be interested to see how it builds.

Hey you could do a lot worse than an old Matchbox kit.

You're definitely right, USMC! This is probably the easiest kit I've ever put together. Everything is fitting in place perfectly. The fuselage is all set! DSCF1434

DSCF1438 Put together one of the wings. The fit was perfect, too soon to tell if I'll need any filler but so far, so good!

DSCF1440 Haha thanks troublemaker! I dig your profile photo- is that a Ki-46? I just picked up a Hasegawa one a few weeks ago. Here's a shot of the nose section- the two halves of the nose were a bit tricky to put on, so I placed the fuselage between the jaws of a large pair of hemostat tweezers on a mount and glued the clear parts on with the body of the aircraft standing upright. It worked and nothing fell off!

Man, I love this plane!  Not as much into the WWII birds as I used to be, but this one is something special. I'll be watching closely.  Yes

DSCF1458 Thanks for the kind words everyone! This build is going together quite easily. As I type this, the cement on the portside wing is drying. The floats are all set, I'll just have to attach the nose cone and MG to the front of the aircraft, and attach a few small pieces and structurally, the plane will be complete!

Got a little bit of time to myself this evening to work on the 115. All the clear plastic is cemented on, it's looking pretty good! DSCF1462

Looking good there rocker. I would say it would be nice to see some green on here, but seems its already in 70/71 colours. I don't envy you masking that canopy.

You`re close Rocker...it`s a Ki-45 Toryu, sadly sunk in Hurricane Sandy...lol.

Bish I don't envy me either! Luckily I've purchased an Eduard mask for this kit, so it won't be as demanding (or cruel and unusual!). This kit was the first I've ever built where each sprue was molded in a different color plastic, I'm not sure why they did this back in the day, but it won't matter once I spray some primer on it. I'm definitely thinking of going with a green scheme, I've seen some models done up in a gray scheme, but I like the way the green looks better :)

Troublemaker, sorry to hear about that Ki-45! :( Did you end up building another one?

DSCF1473 Gotta love pre-cut masks! The greenhouse and the nose are all masked off, and I've painted the frames with RLM 66. Tomorrow afternoon I shall put some primer on this bird!

I don't have a photo to share, but I primed my Heinkel early this morning, and by mid afternoon the primer was dry. So I went downstairs to start painting...only to find my bottle of RLM 65 alllll dried up. I don't know how it happened, but in any case, I'll be hitting the hobby store tomorrow!

What type of paint is it? Some people on theses forums would highly disagree with me but, I have reconstituted many a bottle of dried up paint and had absolutely no trouble at all. With Tamiya paints, I use 99% alcohol to get it nice and thin. On enamels, I use laquer thinner and them I pour the paint through a strainer to get any clumps out. At almost $4 for 1.5 oz. (Model Master), it`s worth the trouble to me anyway.

Rocker, no, I have no idea why matchbox did these multi coloured kits. maybe they thought it appealed to kids. Good choice on the Eduard masks.

I have had issues with fining paint dried up, and i can't point a finger at a reason for it. Sometimes its paint that's had thinner added, sometime it hasn't. Its happened to tinned enamels and acrylic in jars. I think the main factor is how secure the lid is on.

Troublemaker, i have been able to revive a dried up tin of paint on occasion, so i know it can be done.

DSCF1475 Hey everybody! Got back from a reenactment yesterday, and today I got back to working on my Heinkel! Before I left for the weekend I painted the underside with fresh RLM 65 from a new jar I bought at the local hobby store. And while at the store, temptation consumed me, and I picked up yet another kit to add to my stash! But hey, everyone needs a Fokker D VII at some point! Tonight I was able to put on the first coat of RLM 71 - and it came out pretty good. I'll start masking it off for the camouflage tomorrow or the next day.
