Completed P-40B and P-40N
Posted by sanderson_91 on Saturday, August 9, 2014 1:15 PM

Hey all,

I wanted to post some photos of the 1/48 Revell P-40B and the 1/48 Eduard P-40N that were done for the P-40 Group Build which are posted there.  The Eduard P-40N Profipak is a nice kit which includes a resin cockpit and wheel wells.  Had a few fit issues but these were my fault.  Here are some photos:

BTW, the fuel tank is correct in being attached backwards.  Apparently this was a fuel tank converted into a napalm tank for ground support.  Here's a photo of the actual aircraft:

Here are a few photos of the Revell P-40B.  This is an old kit with some fit issues but can be turned into a very nice build with some work.  I scratchbuilt the cockpit since the kit cockpit is a joke.

Thanks for looking!

Steve

These are fantastic.   Love those 80th FG skull and your AVG right on.  There is hope for the Monogram P-40.  Thanks for sharing Steve.

I thought I had commented on this for the P-40 GB but apparently not.  Too many times I get on here to do something and have to put it down.  =]

Anyhow...I second everyone here.  These are great.  Of course I dig the skulls. =]  Are these both 1:48 or 1:72?

Hey Guys, thanks for the nice comments!

Bv - both of them are 1/48 - 1/72 is a bit small for my eyes!!  I really love what you're doing with your P-40 - can't wait to see more of it now that  you've got the paint started!

Very  nice paint work !  What colors did you use, if you don't mind me asking?

Hey Jay Jay,

I used my own mix of Tamiya paints for both P-40's.

On the P-40N, for the faded OD, I used XF-67 Nato Green mixed with XF-57 Buff.  (XF67:2 + XF57:1 thinned 1 part thinner for each 3 drops of paint)  The bottom is straight XF-53 Neutral Grey.  All of these are thinned with 91% Isopropyl alcohol.  Before and after decals, I used Testors Laquor gloss.  After the 2nd gloss coat, I sprayed a highly thinned mist fo XF-57 (about 10% paint, 90% thinner) to fade the OD even more.  After another gloss coat, I used the Dark Dirt Flory wash over the entire model to highlight the panel lines plus add dirt/grime to the rest of the paint.

On the P-40B, I used the same mix for the faded OD, and for the Tan/Earth color, I used XF57 Buff mixed with XF-52 Flat Earth (XF57:2 + XF52:1) thinned again with 91%.  I didn't use a mist of XF-57 on this one but did use the Flory wash.

Thanks Steve!  I hear ya.  1:72 is too small for me to consistently work at and get much enjoyment out of it.  That's just too tiny! I'm perfectly content at 1:48 as well. =]  I really like what you ended up with for both of these.  The P-40B is a classic and I really like what's going on with the -N. That skull on top of the OD green just screams badass. =]

Nice pair of P-40s. Those cammo colors are spot on! Nicely weathered too.

TYVM for detailed expaianation on your paint.  it ws very useful for me.

I'm buikding a "Pearl Harbor" version and I'm not sure if I should "dirty it up " much since it was basically a peace-time aircraft before the Dec 7 attack .and my guess is that the planes where well cared for in Hawaii up to that point.  What do you guys think ?

I would probably keep the weathering to a minimum.  I agree that the planes were probably kept pretty clean before the war.
