WIP Haegawa 1/48 F-18E
Posted by dscri001 on Sunday, August 17, 2014 3:25 PM

Hello everyone. I hope this is the appropriate place for works in progress. This is my first wip thread as I am rather new to the forums so bear with me. I am rather new to modeling airplanes. I used to build cars with just rattle cans and have finally invested in an AB setup and have been slowly learning different techniques and whatnot. So anyways, the aircraft as previously stated will be hasegawa's F-18E. This was one of the first kits I wanted to build after getting my AB, but after going through a couple cheaper kits, decided to hold off until I was a little more confident lol. Anyway, here are the pictures! Thanks for looking!

The kit will be completed with decals from VFA-115, who replaced VFA-192 on NAF Atsugi where I grew up. My father was in VFA-192 and also 115 back when they were A-6's. I am also going to use aires resin cockpit and wolfpack pylon set.

Also will try to build the carrier deck trailor on the side.

I started today with the cockpit which consisted of cutting the original intrument panel shroud and fitting the aires piece. The detail is similar but the aires offers the shroud and panel as one piece. This was my second attempt at cutting and fitting resin and went much smoother than I thought!

The fit is pretty good, just a couple tiny spots I might fill. I will post pictures as I progress. I'm also debating on updating the nozzles as well. Again thanks for looking, and hopefully I'll have more pictures soon!

Thanks for the all the comments! Looking at the parts, I am very happy with the amount of detail the kit offers. As much as I love the numerous parts, I am going to have to practice filling seams before attempting them on the f18. I'm thinking of displaying it in a couple options. One idea I had was displaying it on final approach for a carrier landing: flaps extended, tailhook extended, altering the gear to have them uncompressed and maybe some control input. The other idea would be after landing, wings up, canopy open, and being towed by the deck trailer. On that note, I'll try not to digress too much, the F-16 I'm building by tamiya uses poly caps for the stabs which allows them to be adjusted. Poly caps and rivets are used for ordinances so they can be mounted in a non-permanent fashion. I love the idea of keeping the model somewhat dynamic and will try to incorporate that into the f-18. Anyways, here are some pics of the f-16. I will have more of the f-18 soon! Thanks for looking!

This is a picture I took a while back that I wanted to use as reference even though it is an f18c. It was a very humid and overcast day and really showed the wear.

And just a couple more. Hope I'm not posting too many pictures! These are just a couple I took a while ago and that I will refer to.
