1/32 Hasegawa F-86

Here's the F-86 I've been working on. 95% complete. Decals and slight weathering (?) to follow.

It has been an interesting and challenging build. Overall fit was O-K, considering it's a 40 year old kit. I had to perform some major surgery on the wing tips to bring it back down from an F-40 to an earlier series. Saw, styrene, measure, cut, repeat.

Overall prime with Alclad black. Various shades of Alclad. Airframe Aluminum on the fuselage misted with Aluminum and Duraluminum. Aluminum, Dull Aluminum, Dark Aluminum, and Duraluminum, on the main wing. Lifecolor Light Gull Grey for the Anodized Aluminum on the wing box and tip of the tail. A mix of alclad steel and aluminum for the tailpipe. No AM, except for the gear and decals. Little time spent on the cockpit. Ironically, the canopy fit as good or better, than more modern kits..

Nice looking build Tom. I am still practicing with Alclad, but it gives great results when done right.

Did all f-86's have the centre of the wing like that.

Must be nice to be in control of Alclad as you obviously are.

She looks great, even all taped up and no decals or anything. :)

Alclad is a wonderful to work with. It goes on very thin. I also like that you don't have to thin it at all..just pour into the cup. It can be a delicate finish, so I always try to clear coat it asap, along the way to stop rub off. (which is very easily repaired, btw) Also, with the gloss black primer, very thin coats is ideal. Alclad clear coat goes on so smoothly I am serious considering ditching Future in favor of it for all future builds.

As for the wing box, my understanding from references I saw is yes, they were all coated. It was a corrosion coating and did not add to the strength in any way. As for the actual shade? I went by what I've seen on modern airliners, along their wing box and an estimate of what it may have been on the F-86. I guess you could say I winged it! Cool
