Thanks, Mel -- didn't know that...so the B-25 "Dumbo" in "Catch-22" was legit after all!

The tail guns were not just on J's.  Some C's and D's had the tail gun position added at modification centers.  So it isn't just a "movie" mod!

Clear Left!

Thanks, guys.  I've long had a DVD copy of the film, and Yossarian's "Dumbo" seems to be a B-25C/D model, with a "movie-mod" tail turret position.

A model true to the movie plane would be a B-25C/D with a B-25H/J tail (or the tail turret position) grafted onto it.

Drew, check this out:

B-25

This is an excerpt from that webpage:

For the film, mock upper turrets were installed. To represent different models several aircraft had the turrets installed behind the wings representing early (B-25C/D type) aircraft. Initially, the camera ships also had the mock turrets installed, but problems with buffeting required their removal.

Granted this is Wikipedia, take it for what it's worth.

Hope it helps.

It was a movie mod. If you want to model the movie plane you will need to copy the movie for it. Be aware that different scenes might show different aircraft or mock ups.

Question for B-25 experts

Since Kits World has put out several B-25 decal sheets of markings for planes from the 1970 movie "Catch-22," I'm thinking about modeling Yossarian's B-25 "Dumbo" in 1/48th scale.

Can anyone tell me what model of B-25 had an aft turret, no waist gun positions, and a tail turret, like Yossarian's in the film, or -- was that just a made-up configuration for the movie?

The Kits World decal sheet specs say the plane was a B-25J, but J models had forward turrets and waist gun positions, so..?

And are there any 1/48th scale B-25 kits out there in that "Catch-22" "Dumbo" configuration?
