Zinc Chromate on Outer Skins
Posted by Adam148 on Sunday, September 14, 2014 12:06 AM
Been trying to find photos online to answer this question but no luck. Was zinc chromate used on the outer surfaces of WW2 fighters. More specifically, Navy fighters. I see that interiors and compartments were given a spray, but what about the wings and fuselage. I'll be building a Revell Hellcat soon (first model in 20 years), and I'd like to practice with as much realism and techniques before taking on an Eduard or Tamiya kit.

Thanks to any who are able to shed some wisdom on the topic.

Zinc chromate primers were used as primers on aluminum, but then overcoated with color paint. In many cases they seem to have been used as a final finish on interior parts that were protected from the environment, but even for those interior areas, they were often painted with a finish color.  Of course, for those planes left in bare aluminum there was no primer, but if the exterior was painted, chances are good that it was primed in ZC.

Thanks, guys. This helps.

BlackSheep, I did happen to catch that thread when first posted. Interesting article, but didn't quite answer my question at the time. However, after looking at the thread again, the comments added are very interesting and the link someone posted to the 3-part series about aircraft interiors & ZC led to a goldmine of info. Looking forward to plowing through it.

I have found photos that show the wing folds and wheel wells of an F-6F painted with ZC.  Try Googling F6 Hellcat images.

Yes it was. I don't know on what, when, or where, but I have seen chipped paint with ZC underneath

Like any other paint jobs, a good prep and primer are necessary for good results.

Working on a B-29 restoration project, I was told they did not originally use ZC since the AC was not expected to be in service that long due to combat loses. Was this just a story, or common practice by some AC manufacturers?

Okay, so...

Was it:
ZC-->Primer-->Topcoat?
Or
ZC-->Topcoat?

And:
ZC-Only if there was to be no paint on top?
