Help rigging 1/72 WWI aircraft
Posted by boatdetective on Friday, September 26, 2014 11:36 AM

Hey folks- So I just discovered the Eduard WWI series in 1/72. Astounding! I'm working on a SPAD XIII and am (cautiously) considering rigging it. Here's the deal- the rigging layout is very complex. I really would like to avoid drilling through the wings. Any clues on the best approach? Should i try gluing tiny "U" or eyes into the mounting points before i paint everything?  Any thoughts on the proper material (and where to buy it)? I've heard monofilament and lycra. It would seem the lycra might glue an trim easier.

As for the scale- i know- I'm mad. However, I also futz around with watches.   Thanks!!

You may want to try Wonder Wire. I've heard of good results with it.

Here's a thread with more information:

I've always had pretty good results with stretched sprue in 1/72 scale. It's easy to measure and fiddle into place, attaches neatly (and quickly) with white glue on a toothpick, and is surprisingly strong and knock-resistant. (Plus, with the white glue, if you do need a repair, it's neat and easy to redo.)

I used it on a couple of Airfix Spad VIIs I did before the WW1 GB last year. Here's a link if you'd like to take a look:

I use stretched sprue with white glue as well. After it dries you can tighten them up by using VERY low heat. I use, believe it or not, smoke from a incense stick or firecracker punk. They tighten right up.

Nice work, Greg!

I've had trouble getting stretched sprue to stretch to a consistent diameter. I guess I need to practice more.

Lufbery,

I've posted a method of stretching sprue that results in a constant diameter. It's in the techniques forum.
