Accurate Miniatures Mustang Canopies
Posted by lzdaily@comcast.net on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 6:18 PM
Hello, all! I've decided that I wanted to build an example of all (or at least most) of the Mustangs flown by the U.S. in WWII. I've acquired Accurate Miniatures kits for the A-36, the P-51, and the P-51A and Tamiya kits for the P-51B/C and D. I started with the A-36, which I built pretty much straight out of the box. I'm trying to decide whether I want to just go back and weather it or to get another kit and start over. I just finished (pretty much), the P-51. So, what about the canopies? I don't know whether it's just me or not, but the canopies on both the A-36 and the P-51 really didn't seem to fit very well. After hours of fiddling with them, I reduced, but couldn't eliminate, big gaps between the parts. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, Larry

For what it's worth, I have a photo of my P-51 here: http://home.comcast.net/~lzdaily/IMG_3433_resized.JPG

I've only built the P-51/Mustang Mk.IA many years back, but I do not recall any fit problems.

I built the F-6 version, and used the Malcolm hood, which was really tight, but some sanding on the edge made if fit ok. I had no issues with the back glass or windscreen.

Ok, it sounds like it is just me. So far, I've tried working back to front. I've put in the rear glass, then the birdcage, then the windscreen. I ended up with a big gap between the right rear glass and the center section and between the center section and the windscreen. Would a different order work better? I'm open to suggestions. I attached the clear parts with white glue, so removing them to try again won't be difficult if I can get some idea what to try.

FWIW, I also figured out that Internet Explorer no longer gives me the "use rich text" option when posting. I've switched over to Firefox, so I was able to embed a photo of my P-51. It's my first attempt at weathering an aircraft model (I work mostly with HO scale trains). I added a resin cockpit (not so visible in the photo) and Ultracast guns. I'm also open to suggestions on how to model the antenna.

Looks like a nice build, but it's a terrible angle for seeing what's wrong with the canopy.

Good point. Here are a couple of close ups.

In the photo from the right side, I did manage to pop out the rear panel and move it slightly forward to close the gap between it and the center section. That left some gaps around the rear panel and some spots on the frame that I need to touch up. On this side, the bottom of the windscreen is pretty nicely lined up with the center section.

In the photo from the left, the gap between the windscreen and the center section is more obvious and it looks like the bottom of the windscreen is narrower than the center section.
