Back in the saddle: F4U-1A Corsair
Posted by stoutfella on Thursday, October 9, 2014 11:07 AM

Greetings,

You could say I've been away for a while, about a year and a half, to be semi-exact. I was a regular contributor and group-build junkie, but drifted away last spring/summer thanks to a grueling golf schedule, followed by a kitchen remodel that ate up most of last winter, followed by yet another arduous six months of golf. Only thing I built during that time was Tamiya's Hawker Hurricane, which actually still has a few fiddly bits to attend to.

But with this golf season winding down, I've gotten back to the bench in the past month and managed to complete one build: Tamiya's 1/48 F4U-1A Corsair, done up as the ride of Roger Hedrick, exec of the VF-17 "Jolly Rogers," flying out of Ondonga, New Georgia, in 1943.

The usual superlatives apply to this Tamiya kit. Fit was generally excellent, with only light seam sanding and a couple of tiny spots of filler needed. The engineering of the gull wings make this one a little more finicky than, say, the click-together Mustangs, but it's still a beautiful kit.

I used Tamiya acrylics for the tri-color scheme, white on the bottom, with medium blue and sea blue above, both lightened up a fair amount, as the colors out of the bottle just seemed way too dark. I built the kit basically out of the box, with the exception of some Eduard PE seatbelts and EagleCals decals.

The Corsair was my dad's favorite plane, so this build is in his honor.

I plan to get in a lot more modeling time this winter and get back to participating in the forums here. Next up on the bench is Tamiya's 1/48 Bristol Beaufighter, in night fighter plumage.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

That's a beautiful job SF!  I really like your paint job and the weathering too.  Overall, I'd say you have a real winner here sir.  Bravo!Bow Down

I wondered where you got off to after your awesome contribution to the Butcher Bird GB. Looks like you made a helluva return there stoutfella! Those Tamiya Corsairs lend themselves to a great build OOB and you certainly did this Corsair well.Yes

Inspiring work!  I've got one of these in the stash.  As soon as I get into WWII mode I'll try to build mine as nicely as you built yours!

Terrific job! Every time I see that particular Corsair, I think of Skipper in the "Planes" movie...

Nice to meet you Stout!  I did this model, as Greg Boyington's 883, as my first "big boy" model just under a year ago.  I must say, it sure spoiled me as a modeler for sure.  You did an incredible job, and I think you nailed the tri-coloring and I love your weathering.  I can't wait to see what else you have to offer up...  Perhaps a beat up old golf ball ?!?  You're a more patient man than I am, Charlie Brown.  I gave up the sport about 10 years ago when the doc put me on high blood pressure medicine ;-)  Welcome back!  Raymond

Thanks for all the kind comments. Always appreciated. Mississippivol, I haven't seen the "Planes" movie. I'll have to check that out now. Nathan T, yes, the white tape atop fuselage is a decal. I actually used the Tamiya kit decal for that. Held my breath, but it went down just fine and snugged tight with a bit of Solvaset. I also used a few of the kit stencils, but most of them just about disappear on the dark blue, anyway. All the rest of of the markings are EagleCals "VF-17 Jolly Rogers" sheet. Raymond G: Golf is madness, but I can't help myself.

Cheers,

Stoutfella

If it means that we're gonna see more stuff like that, then I'm glad golf season is ending.  Outstanding!  Yes

Stoutfella,  Great looking work.  even after all the time off, it's like riding a bicycle.  It all comes back pretty fast.  I've been MIA for about the same length of time.  House projects, a couple of weddings, basic procrastination, they all slowed me down.  Well, I've dusted off the workbench and may share some mediocre work in the near future.  Welcome back.     Rick
