Question on F/A-18E Markings...
Posted by Raymond G on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 11:09 PM

It's been several weeks since I've built anything...  Just been busy.  I've got a couple of projects coming up, and I wanted to get a little more practice in shading and weathering before I pick up a higher end model.  I picked up Revel's F/A-18E, partially to support my local Hastings for carrying modeling supplies without me having to drive 30 miles, and partly because I wanted to do something a little more modern.

Anyway, my question surrounds mainly the surroundals, but also many of the markings.  I notice that in some pictures that they are white and blue, some red, white, and blue, and each in various shades of greying.  Is there a hard and fast rule as to which to use? Also, many of the markings are greyed as well.  Is the greying a purposed effect, or is it a result of weathering (oxidation, fading, cheap paint???)

If I do decide to grey the provided decals, would a (very) light wash work, or would I be better off making templates and painting them from scratch?  I kind of like the chalky effect, but I want to remain true to the real thing.

I'll probably just go OOB.  The kit comes with Lt. C.H. Cassady and Capt. V.P. Shorts' from VFA-122's number 100.  The surroundals included are red. white, and blue...

Also, anyone else built this kit?  If so, anything to watch out for?  I know that some of Revel's F-18's have fit issues that require some fill and sanding...  Thanks in advance, Raymond

CAG (Commander Air Group) birds ( those with modex numbers ending in "00") are often high colored or full color marked. Sometimes the stencils and national insignia are also done in the bright Squadron colors. Squadron Leader birds (Modex numbers ending on "01") are usually similarly marked, although not as brightly as CAG birds. Line birds (the ones who do the real work and have been flying the daily combat sorties since 9/11) are usually in the "low vis" all gray markings.

I've built that kit. Two issues I found were a lot of filling/fit work in the intakes and forward fuselage area where the nose halves come together. I also found the right wing warped in my kit, where it sagged a little more toward the ground. I discovered the hot water plastic bending trick too late for this one, so I left it.

Yes, lo-viz markings come installed that way for the working birds. I will use a very light mist with the airbrush and a bit of the base color lightened slightly over the top of them, to blend them in a bit and show sunfading. For this reason I've always been a fan of the lo-viz markings. They just look cooler to me.

Thanks guys!  Stickpusher, I'll add that little tid-bit of information to my tool kit!

Dirkpitt, yeah, pretty much everything I've seen/read on the Revell Hornet's talks about the fit issue.  No problem...  I've got plenty of putty and sand paper...  Just need to find the time ;-)  I didn't notice any issues with the wngs, but I've only done an cursory look at the parts.  I've really been impressed with the detailing so far...  Thanks again for the heads up.  Raymond
