It is fairly easy to do the two types of prototypes. (they were basically Sabre aircraft with some changes)

the operational FJ-2 is a little harder, though.

the easiest way is to do the FJ-2 in 1/72 scale, using a Hobbycraft F-86E kit and a Falcon conversion set.

Here is a discussion we had on Tommy's Naval blog in the comments section.

please keep in mind that the blog entry is more about the FJ-3, but, his links show what it takes to do the operational FJ-2 also.

I believe Kitty Hawk is thinking about doing a Fury for 1/48 scale. They BETTER do it in 1/72 scale, too!

There is a resin kit out there in 1/48th scale. I don't remember which company and have no idea if it's still in production though. I'll look when I get home if I don't forget.

Have any of you built the Grand Phoenix 1/48 FJ-4B Fury?  I picked one up a few years ago at the "bargain" table at King's Hobby in Austin, Texas.  It has some resin parts and PE and looks like a real headache to build.   Definitely not a "fall together" kit.  I couldn't resist.Big Smile

Ah HA! Thanks Gary, I believe that's the kit I was thinking about.

I believe Collect Air produced a 1/48 FJ-2/3 kit in resin some years back. It's long out of production, but can still be found occasionally on E-bay, but it won't be cheap. I used the old Esci 1/48 FJ-2/3 kit. Kit has some obvious shortcomings but with some aftermarket, scratchbuilding, & lots of patience, it turned out looking like a fury.

The kit I have has gotta be the Grand Phoenix one, not sure why I said resin since it's a limited run injection molded kit. As Gary said it does come with resin and PE parts though.

Looks good in the box, but again as Gary said limited run can be a bear to assemble.

EDIT: Just checked and yeap it's the Grand Phoenix kit.

Keep an eye on eBay. There's a Esci J-2/3 that sold in August for $ 42 inc. shipping.

Lots and lots of Matchbox FJ-4's cheap.

There's a decent selection of decals too.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I don't know which version that Collect Air kit matches,,,,,,,but, if it is right for one version, it is off for the other.

If people are going to build the Fury as if they can just use an FJ-2/3 kit for either version, then they might as well just do it the old way and build a Sabre kit and paint it in Navy paint. The differences are as noticeable as the difference between a P-51B and a P-51A (some might say as a P-51B and a P-51D)
