I just want to confirm my thoughts on this model in regard to the correct look of the oil cooler. On the b-3 it has a splitter inside the front opening that the b-4 does not, correct? Also, from the few shots I have found looking up at the front of the cooler, I noticed that there is a riveted panel under the forward front of the cooler, one that the kit does not depict nor any of the line drawings I have found. I suspect it should be on the model and that it was an oversight when designing this kit. If it is NOT supposed to be there I must assume I saw pictures where there was battle damage repaired and I find that unlikely. Thanks for your help, John.

Really, no 109 fanatics out there who can help with this? If it is unclear what I am describing above let me know and I'll attempt a better description. Can't see where to attach a pic to this anywhere.

Hi 70gtvert,

To post or link photos, click the 'Use rich formatting' option found just under the response box, right beside the reply button.  This will refresh your screen and add a tool box with various options to make your posting more detailed.

I looked in my encyclopedia type book Warplanes of the Third Reich by William Green, and unfortunately, there is no info for the aircraft you specified.  From the B-2, the text jumps to the C series of 109's.

regards,

Jack

My bad, I meant E-3,not B-3. Don't know what I was thinking. Explains why no one was able to provide a answer to my question.

Checking Squadron's publication Part 1 on the Emil, I found no reference to the splitter plate located at the front of the oil intake.    I don't think it was a particular characteristic to one frame,  since the engines were the same when production switched over to the E-4.  Only later was a more powerful engine introduced, noted as the 109 E-4/N, though most were produced with the earlier engine type as found in the E-3.

Modeling Madness reviewer Scott Van Aken has a build review of both the E-1 and E-3 and states that  after engine maintenance, usually this piece was left out as it really served no purpose.  So with that, if you don't have an actual photo reference, the rule of thumb is if the aircraft has been in service for quite some time, it's likely without that piece.

I've also noticed several reviews of Airfix's 109E-4 stating the splitter plate should be there because it was not provided in the kit.

For the other detail, I think a photo might help shed more light on what you are inquiring about.

regards,

Jack
