1/32 Tamiya F-16 CJ
Posted by Marmaduke on Thursday, December 4, 2014 9:25 PM

Here is my attempt at Tamiya's awesome F-16 in 1/32 scale. This is a step out of my comfort zone since I mostly do WWII aircraft. I'm going to do this one completely oob including the seatbelts which are Tamiya's metal buckle and sticker version. They're a bit difficult and leave a bit to be desired but it could be worse I guess. The sticker was a bit too shiny so I dipped them in some flat clear after they were finished and they look alright. I have a lot of the assembly finished already with a lot of painting ahead of me. I jump around a lot during construction so bear with me. Keep in mind this is still very much a work in progress. I will try to do a better job of updating my progress but no promises! Thanks for looking!

Looking good so far! This is one of my wish list kits, so I'll be following with interest.

Looks great so far. What markings are you putting on her?

I'll be doing the Tiger meet of the Americas markings out of the box.

I've been eyeballing this, am I safe in assuming it has the standard fantastic Tamiya fit?

Yes, you are safe in assuming that! Even though this kit has been out for several years, the fit is excellent!  There's only a couple seams that need minor attention. My only real complaint with this kit so far is the seam in the windscreen. Overall, I highly recommend this kit. I found mine on ebay for a great price.

Hello all. Just a quick update tonight. I tried uploading last night but my computer was not cooperating. I was able to paint the engine gloss black to get ready for a coat of Alclad. Also I applied the decals to the AGM Harm 88's. The decals seemed a bit brittle and they were really giving me a hard time. I may look into aftermarket decals for the actual plane. Thanks for looking!

Help!! Does anyone know of a good set of decals for this plane?? I've applied some more to the fuel tanks and they've fought me all the way! They're so brittle, I can only imagine how the larger decals are going to be and I'd rather not take my chances. I don't really care what decals I use as long as the color scheme is the same as the box decals (I already have the paint). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ok so I got a little more painting done on the engine. I think I'm probably done with it since it will most likely never come out of the finished model. I also got the ECM pod painted and decaled. Hope you enjoy!

That engine looks terrific.  A shame not much will be seen.

I've never used Alclad before, but it looks fantastic.

Well I finally got a little more work done now that the holidays are behind us. I've got the majority of the painting done aside from some touch ups. Next step will be clear coat before moving on to decals. Thanks for looking.

The AIM-120 on the wing tips drives me nuts. I know its correct but something in the back of my head only wants to see AIM-9 on the wing tips.

The nice thing about this particular kit is that you can interchange them even after the kit is finished.

I'm calling this one done. I didn't do much weathering on this one. This kit was an absolute pleasure to build. Now to find somewhere to put this giant thing! Thanks for looking everyone.

This is fairly typical for the F-16CJ:

Ok "seasick", let me get something straight...if you want to suggest how you want other modelers to build their models you should go about it another way, since your current method just makes me want to change it in a way to annoy you even more. You might try offering something like this..."hey Marmaduke I  really like how you've done what not with the thingamajig but I've noticed that your ordinance may not be correct. Here are some pictures to help! " On a side note, I don't really care what is exactly right, I just care that I am happy with how it turned out. Maybe if more people were equally supportive and helpful on this forum, there would be more contributing members.

Seasick, I'm in total agreement. Does anyone know if it's for aerodynamic reasons? Seems to me an AIM-120 being heavier than an AIM-9, it should be under the wing. But heck, what do I know?

Beautiful job, marmaduke. I've got the Academy version in my stash. Probably need to add another room for my 1:32 kits.

Looks like Sidewinders (AIM-9) on the wing tips to me.... Uhhh, you are talking about the model, right, Straycat?

Outstanding job, by the way, Marmaduke! I've got the Academy 1/32nd version in the stash, and I hope that mine comes out half as good as yours did.

Actually, Dawg, I was referring to the reference photos Seasick posted above that show the AIM-120's on the wingtip rails. Marmaduke's got the AIM-9's there on his kit which I think looks better. I'm just wondering why current -16's carry the -120's on the wing tips. Is it an aerodynamic reason? Weight and balance? Curiouser and curiouser.

That's a lovely looking build, certainly better than the 72nd F-16 I have just finished. Great job all round.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Straycat-Googled the question (my original guess was aerodynamic reasons contributing to better gas mileage) and found several answers.  All seem to be logical and suggest it's for aerodynamic reasons.  It does look odd though!

Here's what I found
