Udet's early Fokker D.VII (OAW) 2076/18.

I have had some recent inquiries (5) about Oblt. E. Udet's reserve and later main aircraft Fok. D.VII (OAW) 2076/18. The following is how I see it.

The first Fokker D.VII Udet got was an early Schwerin built machine that had the fuselage painted red. The elevators had the words "Du doch Nicht!!" in white and the top wing painted a candy stripe red and white. (Lets refer to this one as DDN) One historian believed that Jasta 4 had been re-equipped with the early Fok. D.VII (Schwerin built) between June 15 - 23 1918.

On or about June 16 - 20, 1918 Jasta 11 and other JG I staffelfürhers all were assigned 22 new Fokker D.VII aircraft from OAW (most with BMW IIIa motors). Udet was assigned 2063/18 and 2076/18. Since he since he already had one machine (DDN) he gave 2063/18 to Ltn. H. Dreckmann and Udet kept 2076/18. From all images available the early series Fok. D.VII had 4 color lozenge on all surfaces. The rudder and stabilizer were over painted white. The Jasta 4 fuselages had the four longerons painted with with narrow white, black, white stripes nose to tail.

From the tally of Udet's score he flew this machine the afternoon after DDN was brought down. Udet flew over the crash site noting the carcass of DDN that he had escaped from that morning - June 29, 1918. He also claimed his 36 - 40th victories while being assigned this 2076/18. Attached are Jasta 4 images that corroborate the above information. I have cross dimensions to call on as well but I also suggest you see "Von Richthofen's Flying Circus" by Greg VanWyngarden through Albatros Pub.

I have not seen the one with the white/black on the nose before, that is interesting!

It seems that there were quite a few different planes in approx the same scheeme , with slight variations he flew.

I still need to figure out how to correctly place the very large losenge decals to the model without messing it up! It is a first for me.....

Thanx for the feedback

Also the Osprey book "Richthofen's Circus" by Greg VanWyngarden would help.

Oblt. E. Udet flew several Fok. D.VII aircraft.  After he lost the early production (Schwerin built) with the candy striped top wing and red fuselage (DDN),  he started to fly the eary production (Schneidemuhl built) Fokker D.VII (OAW) 2076/18.  It was covered in 4 color lozenge and had the Jasta 4 livery of black & white stripes on the longerons.  His personal LO! and cheveron were added as well.  The nose cowlings were probably over painted the Jasta 4 black.  These are just two of the Fokker D.VII types he flew.  We know of at least 3 others.  See "Anthology 1" from Albatros pub. for some common images.

Question about Udet's D7
Posted by Theuns on Sunday, January 4, 2015 12:20 PM

Can someone please enlighten me as the the color scheme of Ernst Udet's D07 ( LO!)

I have seen the bottom of top wing in both lozenge aswell as the top red/white stripes replicated on the bottom of top wing.

Same with the white chevron on the tp of te stab, some show it as only a chevron, some where the chevron has stripes extending up the top of the turtledeck.

Could this be different planes??

Thanx
