Eccentric Mig 3 WIP
Posted by Newtothis on Monday, January 12, 2015 8:45 PM

Hi All,

I have no pics yet, I'm afraid, as I haven't even started (the kit is still in the post)!  But I thought I'd kick off the thread because I'm in the planning stages, and I'd like advice.

I'm doing a "what if" style scheme on a Mig 3, but based on one of the red and white numbers.  It seems like a rather impractical way to paint a warplane, but I think it looks fantastic.  Here's an original shot, colorised  by Massimo Tessitori :

A little bit of research (and advice in my other thread) reveals that these planes, when repaired, were left with haphazard paint schemes, as the panels were sometimes left "as is" or repainted hastily.  When looking at a photo of Migs lined up together, you can see this lack of uniformity very clearly (again this photo is sourced from Massimo Tessitori's excellent site http://sovietwarplanes.com ).

So... just for fun, I am going to do a very eccentric scheme.  The main feature will be a bare metal cowel, which I will foil (I always have lots of fun with foiling).  I will probably also make a number of other panels clearly appear to be replaced, and the whole plane will have a very well-used look about it.  I'm hoping, given the field maintenance, that it still appears pretty believable.

Here's my question:  I'd like to come up with a few interesting Russian slogans which are emblazoned on the plane in red.  I don't mind if they're a little funny or ironic.  But I really don't know how to start investigating this.  Any suggestions along those lines would be great.  In fact any suggestions at this stage would be great, and I may well incorporate anything you leave here.

Cheers!

-

Tom

OK I have gotten started.  I like a bit of foiling so I've started there instead of the cockpit.    I'm trialing a new technique, which is to cut into the plastic on the metal panels, to show some contortion of the metal (like on a real plane.  This is pretty tricky, so I haven't got perfect results, but I think the weathering will eventually conceal some of my faults.

Hi Tom. nice choice for model.  It'll be difficult to find the MiG3 with sign because it used in 1941-42 and there are no many possibilities to make a photo. :

interesting signs on MiG3 are

За партию Большевиков (For Bolshevik party)

the same (from the site you wrote)

on the bottom plane sign means За Сталина (For Stalin)

the most interesting sign is on the Yak 1B

Wow, thanks Vladimir!  I take it you can read these?  What does that say on the side of the Yak 1B?  Cheers!!

Vladimir, do you have a reference to a good history on this airplane? IIRC the MIG-3 was a high altitude fighter.

Chasing the ultimate build.

I'm just going to leave this picture here in case I start getting squeamish about weathering. . .

Here's a little of what I've done today.  I'm consciously not going to get too fiddly with the cockpit. . . it won't be the center of attention on this model and I don't want to spend too long on it.  I decided not to get any after market stuff - either straight out of the box or whatever I can scratch build.

So here is the original panel from the kit, painted "old school,"  with nothing but a brush and a sharp stick.  I used some tamiya clear on top of the gauges. . . it actually looks better in person.

That panel looks fantastic. I thought those were decals til you said you painted it. Nice work!
