You mentioned a U-Boat in the distance, Mirage makes pretty decent ones in 1/350 that are about 8 inches long for Around $10-$15 that come with PE if you want something that large.  You'd probably need some form of forced perspective though (like viewing from one direction).

I'll check it out.  The only problem is that the museum limits planes to 1/32.  If I can get my hands on one, and given the subject, they might make an exception.  I don't know.  Like I said, I still have a lot of hoops to jump through on this one.  But that's okay.  The research is half the fun, and I have a bunch of good Cadets and some pretty smart adults that can help me out of this one.  Including some people with access to national archives....  Time to go to work.......  Raymond

Dumas actually makes a Voyager now that I think about it.   If I remember correctly, it's 1/23 scale.   Someone is building one in my group

If I remember right, Pegaso used to use early revell  and maybe monogram molds.  I first came across them in the mid 70s so I can't say for sure if they are even still in business.

Thanks for the help so far.  Yeah, we used pretty much we could het our hands on, though a lot of what I'm seeing of the Coastal Patrol Bases are the Stinsons.  I think my first step needs to be finding the plane/pilot I want to depict, which will mean some emails and phone calls.  I may move the plane from a water landing back into the air, as kind of an "eternal patrol" thing.  What do you guys think?  Raymond

CAP used almost any civilian plane:

CAP used Reliants also as with 10 seconds of googling, there is a color shot of a SR-5 in CAP colors.

Hmmm. It does kinda look like a Cub. I think the problem will be making it a 2 seater and a Reliant won't work because of the radial engine, same as the wagon. I did scare up some guys blog with his Stinson 105 from some Mexican company called Pegaso.

I'll keep looking.

Here's the link to that dudes page.

CAP used many different civil aircraft.  Scalemates shows a 1/48 Stinson Reliant available by AMT and ESCI.  There is also the Hobbycraft 1/48 Cub which I just traded for from a friend as he wanted my Revell 1/32 Super Cub.  Find them on Ebay.

Edit: IIRC Bronco does a 1/35 Cub.

Hey guys, The founding members of the Civil Air Patrol were recently awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their service during Word War II.  Theirs is a truly remarkable and, unfortunately, untold story. They helped to stave off German U-Boat attacks during the early days of the War.  The situation was dire, with shipping from the Atlantic to the Texas Gulf hazardous at best.  Eventually by 1943,again, with the help of the CAP, the U-Boats left the U.S. coast.  They were credited with fifty-seven submarines attacked, one hundred seventy-three reported, and two sunk.  Not to mention mines, srvivors in distress, border patrols, plane fairing, target towing, and to many more things to mention.  Sadly, by wars end sixty-five of our civilian volunteers paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the Allied cause, with many more becoming seriously injured.

What I'm wanting to do is create a tasteful diorama, depicting a period CAP plane making an emergency water landing.  I'll do the plane, and hopefully get our Cadets involved with the diorama box and a background picture (perhaps with a U-boat in the distance) that would contain the names of the sixty-five.  My hopes are to be able to present this to the U.S.S Lexington Fine Scale Model Museum sometime this summer as a memorial.  I know there will be a lot of hoops to jump through for this project, which brings me to my plea for help:  Initial research indicates that the planes being flown were Stinson Voyagers.  Are there any 1:48 or 1:32 scale plastic kits available.  if not, they look to be fairly close to a piper cub, I do seem to recall seeing plastic kits of those.  What do you guys think of using a cub and modifying it?  I'm in the process of running the idea with my initial superiors.  If they like it, I have the ability to go straight to the National Public Affairs Officer....  This may widen my options somewhat.  Let me know, Raymond
