TBM-3 Avenger--Position lights
Posted by Bakster on Sunday, February 22, 2015 8:29 PM

Greetings..  I am working on an Academy TBM-3 USS Bunker Hill kit.  However, I am building it to look like the 1945 Flight 19 #28 plane as shown below. This kit comes with clear position light lens covers, #13 as shown below. The other wing is not shown in the image I posted.  I have a few questions.

1.  Does anyone have first hand knowledge or reference material indicating if the lens covers were clear? Or were they colored lens covers? I found a reference on the Internet that with the older Avengers, they used colored lens covers, and with later models they switched to clear lens covers.  The reference that I found was not very sure of that fact though.

2.  In either case, do you have any knowledge as to the color for each wing?

3.  With the instructions as shown below, there are two other clear parts that are to be installed.  Number 82 and number 80.  I have no clue what the functions are of these let alone how I should paint them.  The instructions do not say.  I found an actual Avenger image that showed part 82 painted the same color as the fuselage.  However, this was a modern day refurbished plane and it may not be accurate to the 1945 spec.  Can anyone confirm?  Part 80 is circular and mounts underneath the wing.  Is this another light of some sort?  Color?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks much!

Steve

I have an awesome Accurate Miniatures kit of the same plane. The exploded drawing is nearly the same as yours pictured.  It says part # 80 is a landing light ( wich should be clear) and part # 82 is a leading edge light. Like you ,I hafta do some more research on the leading edge light as to the color of the lens/bulb.

The leading edge light ( #82)  is an approach light.  Approach lights have a clear lens.

#80 is a swing-down landing light which is also a clear lens

as far as the nav lights go, they are:   Red for port and green for starboard

Thanks guys.  SubarooMike... In your opinion, do the Nav covers remain clear? And then I just paint a colored bulb in the light recess?

That's what I would probably do. I have done that before and it looks really cool seeing the colored "bulb" in the recess.   But I would  have to say it would be what ever I thought looked better at the time.    I just searched for quite a while (of pictures of WW2 Naval aircraft in color) and I did not see many of the Avenger (where I could see the nav lights clearly).  But on other aircraft I saw both clear and tinted lenses.

Yes that was my experience too.  It couldn't find much for vintage images that clearly show those lights.  Well I appreciate your efforts and thanks for your advice.  I have a few weeks before I reach the stage of putting them on so I will see how feel about it then.

Bulbs are colored, covers are clear. "Green is right" is what I taught my flight students.

Say 7474...  Did you fly an Avenger?  Would love to hear about it.

Thanks for the help!
